Speaking Na'vi. Really.

avatarposter.jpgMany movies have fans, but few have overly dedicated, obsessive fanatics.  How do you know when they have crossed the line?  When they start speaking the made up language you developed for the movie.
In the tradition of Star Trek fans who speak Klingon, Avatar has fans speaking Na'vi.

I have never been accused of being one of the cool kids.  I'll even admit I attended a Star Trek convention (I met Mirina Sirtis/Counselor Troi and she was awesome).  I can understand dressing up like a character and hanging out with other people who have done so because you get some sort of sense of community and belonging, or you wish you could woo green alien babes like Captain Kirk, and think it might be possible if you put on the uniform.  However, even I am at a loss why any human being would dedicate hours and days and weeks of time to learn to speak a language which has ZERO value in the real world.

What do these people want to accomplish?  You can't go to Na'vi and interact with the natives to look less like a tourist than you really are.  You can't get a job because you can speak Na'vi (will these people put it down on their resume as additional skills and language abilities?).

You could spend this time to learn how to speak Spanish or French, which can improve your life.  It's like these people who spend hours and hours playing Guitar Hero when they could have become Eric Clapton if they spent that amount of time in real guitar lessons!

It's time for everyone to confess.  Are you learning Na'vi?  Are you tempted?
