If you had asked me that question a month ago, I would have told you Ghostbusters 3 was on the way in time for Christmas 2011, but Bill Murray claims it's not a done deal, and he isn't all that interested.
We have heard about various possible storylines (Bill Murray comes back as a ghost!, The Ghostbusters train a new generation of Ghostbusters who happen to be HOT BABES!), other actors have said they are ready to go, and there was supposedly a fight between the studio and the main stars over the involvement of original director Ivan Reitman.
However, Bill Murray is in NY promoting a new movie this week, and he says of Ghostbusters 3, "it's just a myth." Of course, he also said it might be fun to do it again. Murray is screwing with everyone. That's why we love him. Also, he's the one who is smart enough to stop any sequel that will be as bad as Ghostbusters 2.
On the other hand, Anchorman 2 might be coming to a theater near you. Director Adam McKay says all of our favorite stars from the first movie have agreed to make the sequel (with pay cuts!), but the studio is not ready to green light the project and write the check to start paying everyone.
You have to think Anchorman 2 is a sure fire hit for Paramount. Much like Austin Powers, the first movie did OK financially, but it became a cult hit on DVD and cable as people started to realize how good it was and how the movies were full of all sorts of jokes you didn't pick up on the first time around.
Austin Powers yielded 2 more extremely profitable films (with a 4th being planned by Mike Myers right now). Anchorman 2 has the same potential. If you can make a new A Nightmare on Elm Street or Shrek 4, why not Anchorman 2? It's time for Paramount to open up the check book and make it happen.
UPDATE - Adam McKay is reporting on his Twitter account that Paramount has PASSED on Anchorman 2. Hopefully, he can find a new home for Ron Burgandy.
