Now, Lindsay Lohan has a chance to save herself as she stands at the crossroads of success and self-destruction.
We have all made our share of jokes about Lohan's drunken escapades,
topsy turvy life and shocking fall from grace, but she has a chance to
change all of that.
It starts July 20.
As you know, Lohan has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating her probation in a DUI case that has been ongoing for a few years. On July 20, she appears in court to surrender herself and spend anywhere from 25 to 90 days in prison. The joint. The big house.
Then, by judge's decree, she must spend the next 90 days in rehab.
Welcome to rock bottom, Lindsay.
For the first time anyone can remember, you will spend over 110 days without any alcohol or drugs clouding your mind and influencing bad behavior.
You get to escape all of the hangers-on and the friends who use you for reflected glory or to pay the bills for their partying.
You get to avoid the paparazzi.
You don't have to see, hear or read a constant drum beat of criticism about your life and career.
You will have several people with more knowledge and experience to guide you and help you make good decisions.
Right now, Lindsay probably thinks her life is over, and it is if she doesn't take this seriously or do the right thing. Her career is dead. She possibly is in financial ruins. Her demons control her waking hours, and lead her by the nose to night time debauchery that causes her to be unprofessional when dawn breaks and she must show up for work.
Sounds alot like Robert Downey, Jr. back in the day.
Before he was Iron Man, Downey was a drug addict.
He was arrested speeding down Sunset Boulevard with a gun and drugs.
He broke into a neighbor's home and fell asleep in one of the beds.
He wandered around Culver City barefoot and high.
He lost role after role.
He got fired for not showing up for rehearsals, and no production could get insurance because he was such a high risk to implode, and maybe even die.
But, Downey got it together. He always was a talented guy, which earned him an Oscar nomination for the 1992 film, Chaplin, back before he became a punchline and pathetic wreck of an addict.
It wasn't easy, but he had to start at the bottom, taking small roles in television and movies, relying on friends to hire him and often agreeing to take some of his salary after the production wrapped, to insure he stayed clean enough to finish the project.
Lohan can do it, too. As a younger actor, she showed charm, comedic ability and could carry a film by herself. Don't believe me? Check out Mean Girls again.
Most of all, she has a group of people who want to see her succeed. She might be the butt of many jokes, but a dedicated group of young women 21 - 29 years old see her as the troubled sister who just needs to catch a break and clean herself up. A Lindsay Lohan comeback will be welcomed with open arms.
However, it will only happen if Lindsay makes the hardest decision of her life.
Will she stay clean and sober?
