The Kennedy Center Honors Oprah and Sir Paul McCartney

|
oprah.jpgForget about DC Housewives parties and Real World housemates trying to become rock stars, DC's hottest event each year is The Kennedy Center Honors, and they kicked it up a notch with the announcement of this year's honorees.

Ladies and gentlemen, Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard, and Sir Paul McCartney are coming to town.

For 33 years, The Kennedy Center has honored those who have made positive contributions to American culture including Bruce Springsteen, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Diana Ross and more.  Yet, this year's group of honorees could be the greatest collection to date.

TV Icon/movie producer/actress/businesswoman/all around Goddess Oprah Winfrey headlines this year's list, but the rest of the gang is well worthy of kudos as well.

In addition to Winfrey, rock and roll legend Paul McCartney, who was selected in 2002, but had to decline for personal reasons, will have the house twisting and shouting.  Will he be bold enough to ask Oprah if he can hold her hand?  If you didn't get that one, just tell that joke to your Mom and Dad, give them 5 - 10 minutes to recover from laughter, and they'll explain it.

The Feted Five is rounded out by Tony award winner Jerry Herman who composed scores and lyrics for Hello Dolly as well as La Cage Aux Folles, choreographer Bill T. Jones and country and western superstar Merle Haggard, who was inspired to turn his life around and become a singer after seeing Johnny Cash in concert at San Quentin Prison.  Haggard was an inmate with a lifelong career in crime at the time.

The big show takes place December 5, which is preceded by a special reception hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama.  I have a feeling there will not be a Salahi in sight.

It will be recorded for broadcast in late December.
