As you have probably heard by now, Richards has a new autobiography coming out, and he doesn't hold back on any topic. However, his comments on his historic drug use and how he avoided overdose have the Mouse House chiefs up in arms.
Seriously?
Keith Richards, who caused a similar uproar that threatened his
inclusion in Pirates 3 a few years ago, is the world's most famous drug
user, and everyone who is of adult age knows it. The idea that kids will be influenced by
comments in a book they will never read or care about is silly, and parents already have an opinion about The Rolling Stone.
Plus, Disney is not just family films. They made a decision in the 1980's to branch out with the creation of Touchstone Pictures to make R-rated material. In the 1990's, they bought Miramax Films, which specialized in indie films and popular foreign pictures, all of which had some adult connotation and material in them.
It sounds like the unnamed executives in question are holding on to the outdated, ancient belief that Disney is all about families and nothing else.
And, let's not forget, the Pirates franchise is not a kid-oriented one. The three movies have been rated PG-13, so no toddlers will be harmed in the viewing of Richards' performance as Captain Teague - father of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), especially since I highly doubt Richards will be doing drugs in the movie.
So, is this a rumor that will be true, or did some genius Disney PR executive come up with a way to get us all talking about the movie?
