Yogi Bear Movie Kills Oscar Dreams

|
Thumbnail image for yogibearposter.jpgBased on the trailer, when it is released in December, Yogi Bear is the movie that might destroy your soul, but, for now, it is destroying Oscar dreams for animators all across the globe.

Why?

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an animated film can qualify for the Best Animated Feature category if a major number of characters are animated and over 75% of the film's running time contains some animation.

After a review by the Academy, Yogi Bear was disqualified.

While that might be news to cause most of you reading this to rejoice, it has a massive impact on the Oscars race.

If 16 animated features are ruled to be eligible, the Academy will have 5 nominees for Best Animated Feature.  When Yogi Bear was disqualified, it left us with 15 eligible films, which lowers the number of nominees to 3 (and explains why the Academy, near the deadline, encouraged more animated films to jump into the competition).

Toy Story 3 and How To Train Your Dragon are LOCKS to get nominations, which leaves some heavy hitters to battle it out for the last nomination.

Will it be Megamind? Tangled? Despicable Me

All three might have been nominated if the field was set at 5.

Plus, since members of the Animation Branch of the Academy vote for the nominees, you will find great support for Summer Wars (which appeals to the fans of Japanese animation, which tends to get at least one nomination) and The Illusionist (which has been gaining great fanfare among enthusiasts).  These voters are not easily swayed by what is popular and want to showcase all aspects of animation in films, so I always look for one surprise in this category.

Who are the lucky 15?

-Alpha and Omega
-Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
-Despicable Me
-The Dreams of Jinsha
-How to Train Your Dragon
-Idiots and Angels
-The Illusionist
-Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
-Megamind
-My Dog Tulip
-Shrek Forever After (I forgot this came out this year!  That cannot be a good sign)
-Summer Wars
-Tangled
-Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue

Ballots will be mailed out to Academy members on December 27.

Ballots must be returned by January 14.

Nominees will be announced January 25.
