The Big O, Cheap bargain finds, Giveaway and Heel of the week!

THE BIG O: MOST POWERFUL CELEB ON THE BLOCK

Forbes came out with their list of World's Most Powerful Celebrities for 2010, and it's noooo shock that Oprah Winfrey took--or rather earned the number one spot. So how exactly does Forbes make their list and what does most "powerful" really mean? Well the term "power" is not juts about income. They factor in fame, which it measures by calculating how often the individual is mentioned in print, TV, radio and on the Internet. Beyonce Knowles came in at number two, and "Avatar" director James Cameron was number three on the list. Rounding out the top 5 was Lady Gaga just above Tiger Woods at the 4 and 5 spots. I was surprised to see Britney Spears on the top ten (#6 actually) considering she's been pretty low key for the past couple of years-- post head shaving, umbrella hurling incidents of the past.

But clearly this grown up pop princess still has it and is still being written, and talked about. Like now I suppose!!! Since I am writing about her this very second. Ok I am stopping now.

So will the Oprah empire ever die down even now that she is planning to step down from her throne? I doubt it. Oprah is and will continue to be a powerhouse--just not always on camera. She'll be working it--behind the scenes. Say what you want about Oprah (and her weight battle) but their is something about this woman that connects to EVERYONE. And that my friends is truly POWERFUL. Ok segwaying from the rich, powerful and famous to most of us normal folks reality: BARGAIN FINDS!

BARGAIN FINDS @ MARSHALLS!!!!
Ok I usually showcase the stiletto of the week, but this weeks heels are extra special because they are not only stunning, but such a BARGAIN find. Nothing is more thrilling than the hunt of a true bargain. I have always loved shopping at consignment shops and thrift stores.Though its been around for a long time, I never noticed how great Marshalls is. Marshalls has such incredible deals-- designer pieces for just a fraction of the cost! And yes you have to be in the mood to shop around and dig a little, but it's well worth the time. These days with the economy we are all looking for a little relief in our wallets and stores like Marshalls and Tj Max are doing just that! I'm sure even Oprah has shopped there with her BFF Gayle King at one time or another.

Heel of the week:

Yes I feel like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in these shoes. They are super comfortable even with a 3" heel. I love the peep toe look for summer, and guess what?!!! I paid just $40 dollars for them at Marshalls.

Swimwear:
Picked up this hot pink bikini number for the pool

Love the strapless top. No tan lines yay!

Made by one of my favorite surfer girl brands

And the best part was that it was only $20.00!

Houseware:

This potpourri owl is so cute. Great for a gift or for yourself! I just had to get it. Smells so nice in my apartment thanks to the fresh citrus notes permeating through the air. It's functional and decorative. Did I mention I got it for $15.00?

M&V WITH CAPITAL COOKING'S LAUREN DE SANTIS:
We had so much fun in the kitchen with DC's favorite culinary gal from the hit show Capital Cooking with Lauren DeSantis.

We were basting. chopping, cutting, boiling...ok not really, Lauren did most of the work since cooking is neither my or Markette's strong suit. (Look out for our segment titled "Kitchen Confessionals"--where the three of us share our kitchen disaster stories) Lauren showed Markette and I how to make a delicious Tzaziki dip from her new cook book.

Lauren's hit show Capital Cooking takes viewers on a gastronomic journey and her NEW accompanying cook book contains over 90 different recipes including appetizers, main entrees, cocktails, and tons of cooking tips. The best advice Lauren gave us was: keep it simple, prep your ingredients, don't be afraid to dig in, and of course have fun! YOU can win an autographed copy of Lauren's cook book too. "Like" DC on HEELS, post your favorite cooking tip on our wall, and voila you will be automatically entered to win Lauren's new cook book.

You can also buy her cook book from www.amazon.com which retails for $29.99

We always keep it fun!

All smiles here

Eating the Tzatziki dip that Lauren showed us how to make

And lets not forget about the cocktails we made: Mango Margarita and the Flirtini

FASHION DISASTERS AND DARLINGS: FOR EVERY MISTAKE YOU ARE FINED $100

Brown shirt, red bra showing, brown skirt, and running shoes??? Fined $300

Only one mistake here, one BIG mistake--Is it a boot or a sandal? Not loving these at all
Fined $100 buckaroos

Ok this isn't sooo bad, I just didn't know helmets had "hair flair"-- It's kind of rock and roll though so I get it. Partially fined $50

Thank goodness I ran into Yanee from Alexandria, Va.

Love the floral skirt and strappy sandals!

Yanee is picture perfect in this flirty mini skirt and tank. The tank is form fitting and the fun floral pattern on the skirt keeps it young and fresh. The yellow strappy sandals by Steve Madden add the right kind of "flair" to her look and black sunglasses and an oversized boho bag keeps things urban.
Yanee's three favorite bargain stores to shop are:
Steve Madden (for shoes, like her sandals pictured above)

Yanee says it's important to keep things light and comfortable for the hot summer, that's why skirts are the perfect choice. She says to steer clear of jeans, as they can look cute but leave you feeling like a hot sweaty mess.

Buff Body of the Week

|
I found this week's Buff Body in the produce aisle at the Giant in D.C. on Park Road...

fola_color.jpg
His name is Fola Awosika and he is the co-owner of TRI Fitness, an on-site personal training service based in Washington, DC that promises to whip Washingtonians into shape one bicep curl at a time.

OK, so it's no secret that exercise is the key to this personal trainer's Buff Body, but when I asked Fola what he ate in order to keep his bod in such tip-top shape, he said:

"Simple carbs: post workout and first thing in the morning. Complex carbs: through out the day and night, as well as pre-workout."

Huh?!?! Since I'm too stoopid to know the difference between a simple carb and a complex one, I 'Googled' the terms and this is what I found:

Simple Carbs:

Simple carbohydrates are also called simple sugars and are chemically made of one or two sugars... They are absorbed quickly -- just think how fast sugar-based candy melts in your mouth. Simple carbs also include foods such as fruit and milk.

Complex Carbs:

Grains such as bread, pasta, oatmeal and rice are complex carbs, as well as some vegetables like broccoli, corn legumes such as kidney beans and chick peas. They take the longest to digest.

Alright, that seems simple (and complex) enough. But I'm still a bit confused. If anybody out there has more buff body nutrition tips, then please leave a note in the comments section below. And, if you wanna nominate yourself or someone you know for Buff Body of the Week, then send an e-mail to: dconheels@gmail.com.

WORLD CUP MANIA: LAST MINUTE GOAL AND MARADONNA's FASHION CHOICE?

Three minutes. That's all it took to almost be 86'd out of the World Cup for Team USA. But star player Landon Donavan kicked it into high gear with his thrilling goal, beating the Algerian squad today, and now Team USA advances to the playoff round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Most other countries don't view the USA as a leader or winning team in "football. " We are the underdogs when it comes to winning the World Cup, but if today's play by Donavan is any indication of the future, then I'd say it feels great being the underdog. GO USA!

Another team I am looking forward to watching is Argentina.
I lived in Buenos Aires for two years and the excitement that surrounds and unites this south american country when it comes to "soccer" is unmatched to anything I have ever seen. Their national hero Diego Maradonna had god-like status and can't go anywhere in the country without being mobbed. I noticed years ago when I was living there that he would wear two watches.

When I asked why, I was told that first and foremost, Maradonna is eccentric and eclectic in his tastes, but that the real reason was so he could always have the local time in Argentina where is two beloved daughters Dalma and Giannina reside.

Yahoo reported the story earlier last week and although they were accurate about him having one watch set to the time of wherever he is in the world and the other set to the local time back in Argentina, they didn't mention that he started this " eccentric trend" years ago because he was traveling so much all over the world and it was actually more for sentimental purposes. Don't get it twisted sentimental or not, those watches could probably fund a kid through college. He is wearing two very pricey watches designed by Hublot.

CELEBRITY DOPPELGANGER: AIDAH FONTENOT

This weeks celeb dopp is Aidah Fontent. Coming in strong at 83% is Aidah's number one celeb look-alike  is hot hollywood actress Gabrielle Union. At  the number two and three  spots is actress  Nia Long and Rosario Dawson. Lets watch Aidah morph into her number one look-alike.

5 WEBSITES THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Katrina Kugel is the co-founder of jasmere.com and has spent years scouring the Internet to save pennies wherever she can. Katrina has narrowed teh field down for you to the 5 Websites that you MUST know about.

  • (1) Need something to do with the kids all summer long that won't break the bank? Try www.kidsbowlfree.com There are more than 800 bowling centers across the country that participate in this program which allows kids to bowl for free all summer long. No catch, it's as simple as registering online for your local participating alley

  • (2) Sample sale websites are now everywhere- many specializing in a particular avenue- either beauty, or home goods, or fashion, but www.jasmere.com offers a little bit of everything. Past deals have included handbags, gourmet cookies, coffees, designer denim, letterpress stationary, jewelry, hammocks and more. Their bottom line: the more people that shop, the LOWER the price goes. When the daily product offer is introduced, consumers have 24 hours to drive the already discounted price even lower, resulting in up to 80% off the suggested retail price of a product. No one is charged until the end of the 24 hour period- so the idea is to get as many people purchasing the product as possible to keep driving the price even lower- the final price is up to the consumer. On average, most products wind up selling for 68% off the retail price.

  • (3) Before you shop- anywhere online or at the mall or a major retailer- log on to Dealio.com. Dealio has thousands of discount online coupons, as well as the best shopping deals. You can print out coupons to bring to a store, or take advantage of online coupon codes for when you're shopping from the comfort of your own home. Members share the coupon codes they find as well in the Dealio community.

  • (4) Want to save hundreds of dollars each month on groceries? Grocery.com is one of the simplest sites we found- you just select the coupons you would like to print, or use the checkboxes at the top to select all the coupons in a certain category- it breaks everything down by food, household, petcare, beverage, and so on.As you select coupons, you'll see your estimated total savings update in the green bar. When you're ready to print your grocery coupons, hit the "Print Your Coupons" button and you're done! Since they're all manufacturers coupons you can use them just about anywhere.

  • (5) Before you book your next vacation, sign up on Yapta.com. It's free and allows you to track flight prices before you buy- alerting you via email when prices drop and when to buy to save money on airfare.

Vanessa xoxoxoxo

So, my managing editor, Madge (an old-school journalist who believes women who want to be taken seriously at work should not wear make-up) walks over to me the other day and says:

"Honey, the only way you can make money on the Internet is by selling shoes or porn."
ellisy_blue_suede.jpgUh... Gee... Thanks, Madge! She had totally burst my bubble of thinking that my job as a multimedia journalist could actually bring the company huge profits someday. Feeling a bit depressed, I headed over to the mall at Pentagon City for some shoe therapy... and it was there that I had an epiphany.

wasima_red_leopard.jpgBrowsing through the hundreds and hundreds of sandals, stilettos and peep toes, I felt myself being drawn toward the Jessica Simpson Shoe Collection. Then, it dawned on me: Jessica may not be the dumb blonde that everyone thinks she is.

Although she is known for her "blonde" moments -- famously asking her then husband, Nick Lachey, if her Chicken of the Sea canned tuna was chicken or fish -- J. Simps is no dummy

Long after her reality-TV career fizzled, her movie roles dried up and her album sales waned, the one viable enterprise that has steadily contributed to her estimated $55 million net worth is her Internet shoe sales.

Meanwhile, her former husband has been reportedly struggling to pay the bills, which has allegedly halted him from throwing a huge wedding with his new love, Vanessa Minillo.

jessica_simpson_press_main.jpg
Hmmmm.... maybe Jessica was right... maybe she was eating chicken! Nick may have teased her for making a dumb comment, but it is Jessica who is laughing all the way to the bank -- and in her platform heels, nonetheless!

So back to my epiphany:

1) Jessica Simpson is smarter than we all may think.
2) I need to start selling shoes on the Internet instead of writing about them!
3) I need to buy some sandals from the Jessica Simpson Shoe Collection -- they are so cute!

Hope everyone had a fantastic father's day and spoiled dad rotten. I sent my dad a personalized mug with our photo, framed portrait and some gourmet cupcakes. And speaking of cupcakes...

CUPCAKE SISTERS:

The Georgetown Cupcake sisters and owners Katherine Kallanis and Sophie LaMontagne will be watched by millions all over the country on their new show "Cupcake Sisters" hitting the airwaves on TLC. The sisters are selling about 800 cupcakes a day according to an article in the Washington Post, and at $2.75 a pop--well you do the math. I'd say they are doing well. America has an obsession with cake. There's Cake Boss, The Ace of Cakes, Ultimate Cake Off and now The Cupcake Sisters!! The g-town sistas' will be "battering" it out on TV spilling their secrets and recipes on how to master the perfect icing, sprinkles and everything else in between AND you know when theirs family involved there's sure to be drama..... It's incredible how people will still wait in line however long it takes to get their hands on that perfectly pretty little pink packaged cupcake. Cupcake sister Sophie LaMontagne actually told me the pink box was actually a mistake. They had them made for Valentines Day the first year they opened and had leftovers. People kept requesting the pink one and voila!! Genius marketing strategy employed. You can spot a pink box from a mile away and you know it's Georgetown Cupcake.

So awhile ago Markette and I decided to do a blind cupcake testing ourselves between: Baked and Wired, Cake Love, Georgetown Cupcake, and a store bought one from Giant. Watch and see who came out on top! You may be surprised...

AND THE WINNER IS....
The winner of Top Chef Spike Mendelshon's NEW cook book is DC on HEELS fan Sara Mosqueda-Fernandez. Congratulations Sara, your name was randomly drawn and now YOU get an autographed copy of the book, and have the chance to master some of Spike's famous burgers and shakes!

Buffalo Chicken Sliders, $7.95

I know what you're thinking: "$7.95, that ain't bad." But actually seeing these bite-sized "boy-guhs" in person may have you singing a different tune.

While the buffalo chicken sliders are extremely tasty, they are also extremely bite-sized -- I'm talking about no bigger than a large hush puppie.

And, yes, while it is only an appetizer, the other thing that kind of annoys me about this dish is that it comes with only 3 sliders.  Since I was splitting the plate with someone else when we ordered it, we had to play the awkward game of:  "You take the last bite." --  "No, you take it." -- with neither one of us not really meaning it (you know how that goes).

Is it too much to ask for an even portion of 4 sliders for the same price of $7.95?

I dunno, I'm just a hungry patron. What do you think? Deal or No Deal?

Here are some details to help you decide:

Menu Item: Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Price: $7.95

Restaurant: The Heights

Cuisine: Traditional American Fare

Neighborhood: Columbia Heights, Northwest DC

What the menu tells you you'll get: "Buffalo Chicken Sliders w. Provolone"

What I actually got: 3 tasty, but small white meat buffalo chicken sliders which, when put together, doesn't even amount to a whole chicken breast.

Would you order this? Is this a Deal or No Deal? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

xoxo,

Salahi Post Mortem

|
Something didn't sit well with me after attending America's Polo Cup. Around 4 a.m. yesterday morning I woke up with a feeling of guilt... should I have partied with the so-called "party crashers" who allegedly breached national security?

Thumbnail image for polo_cup_group.jpg
Admittedly, I did not have this feeling while at the event. It was my first time meeting the Salahis in person, and while I had previously read about their infamous rise to fame in the Washington Post, I did not attend the event to scrutinize or pass judgment.

It was mainly curiosity that brought me there, to the National Mall (and the opportunity to interview the most intriguing and controversial couple in the Washington Metro Area).

Michaele has a magnetic personality. Standing about 6-feet-tall (in heels) with platinum blond hair and a big smile to match her big hat (a 'Polo Cup' fashion "do"), I go up to her and introduce myself with my co-host Vanessa (who had interviewed her last year).

"Yes, yes, of course, how are you?!" I am greeted so warmly I can't help but feel like I have known her for years. I gush. "I'm fine, how are you? You look great!" The standard Washington pleasantries go into effect (although it was true, she did look great).

Tareq's energy is just as magnetic. Soft spoken with a gentle smile plastered across his face, he is easy to talk to. Dressed in a polo uniform and boots (he's the captain of the team), he walks around the event greeting his guests as any gracious host would do.

From the surface, it's hard to believe this seemingly powerful couple with charismatic personalities could do anything that would spark national controversy, let alone a federal grand jury investigation, which would eventually lead to the resignation of the first-ever African American White House Social Secretary, Desiree Rogers.

This year's America's Polo Cup was three times smaller than last year, murmurs a guest. Standing near the silent auction table, I notice there are no bids on the scores of celebrity-autographed memorabilia. This, among controversy of a fund-raising scandal.

Sure, the Salahis made a major mistake and on a very large and public scale. But is the only difference between them and the average person that their mistakes made national headlines? And, are they so different from any Washington politician caught with his or her hand in the cookie jar, except that their constituents are fame and celebrity?

Should I have gone to the event or should I have stayed at home? As a blogger and TV host who covers events in Washington, DC, yes, I believe I should have gone. But if I had it to do over again, I would not have chosen to be photographed along side them. And, aside from that, I'm not so sure... the one thing I am sure about is that it's not so much how you fall, but how you get up that defines who you are.

And if the Salahis can rebound from their embarrassing moment in history, then anyone can... I guess we'll all just have to wait and see (Bravo TV has confirmed the Salahis as cast members on the upcoming "Real Housewives of DC").

I hope they use their new national platform on Bravo TV to do some good in their communities and the charities they say they serve. I also hope they work to show the country that people really can change.

xoxo,

Markette

Americas Polo Cup with the Salahis

POLO FEVER: AMERICA'S POLO CUP USA VS INDIA

Tareq & Michaele Salahi rebounded from a controversial year with a polo party and a positive attitude. The sun was shining (it was a scorcher of a day actually) but the wine was flowing, the ponies were galavanting, and the polo match was in full force. This years event was held in West Potomac Park, and featured food from vendors including Tandoori Nights, Kellari, and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. There was a silent auction offering dozens of signed photographs, sports jerseys, and musical instruments from entertainers and musicians. I had my eye on the pink signed Taylor Swift guitar. Markette was eyeballing the Jimmy Buffet one. There was a a guitar listed as being autographed by Paul McCartney that had a minimum bid of $1,050. I don't think there were too many bids on many of the items though.

This years event brought out about 250 people. There was a Fashion Show, Best Hat Contest and Best Sari Contest. (The Saris were gorgeous up close.) Miss India Worldwide looked stunning and another attendee we interviewed said her Sari weighed about 14 pounds and took her 45 minutes solo to put on--with help she said it would take about 10 to 15 minutes. Team USA brought home the trophy this year with a 5-4 victory over India. It was a close match. Or so they say, I don't know a thing about Polo. I just learned what a chukker was (it's a period of play). I thought it was a guy who through the ball out on the field =) Well, it is an interesting sport.

POLO FACTS:
Polo is believed to be the oldest game in the world. It originated in Pakistan as a war game well over 2,500 years ago.
The game taught warriors agility, quick thinking, and combative skills on horseback.
It's the oldest known team sport known to man

The Polo field is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide - almost the size of nine football fields.

The mounts are called "polo ponies" although they are actually horses ranging from 14 to 16 hands high and weigh 900-1000 pounds. Most are between 5 and 15 years of age. A good horse can account for anywhere from 70-80% of a player's ability and net worth to his team.

The ball they play with is made out of plastic. Though back in the day it was played with a wooden ball.

Pretty Woman was a great movie. (Ok that's not a fact) But we all love the polo scene in the movie with Julia looking ravishing and sooo classy in her polka dot brown dress and heels!

Media was out in full force this year including the Washington Post, Washington Times. International Asia TV, Associated Press, and many other bloggers and writers. Michaele was also wearing her battery pack mic which we are pretty certain has to do with a little show called "The Real Housewives of DC" (Michaele couldn't comment about it as I'm sure she and Tareq have signed NDA's (nondisclosure agreements) through the roof with the Bravo network. Stay tuned for our interview with the Salahis'. Until then enjoy the photos of this years Polo Cup. Next year the visiting country will be Costa Rica.

I feel a "situation" coming on!

mike_sorrentino_situation.jpgHe's baa-aaaack! Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is coming back to prime time when the cast of "Jersey Shore" take on Miami this summer. The show premieres July 29 at 10 p.m. on MTV... but Mike doesn't want you to have to wait until then to check out his awesome abs.

Oh no, this self-proclaimed "Guito" is showing off his BUFF BOD any chance he gets... and he shamelessly admits that it's all for the ladies. Yeah girls, he actually says on the show he's just out to have a good time with any good-looking girl who's willing. Ugh!

This should be motivation for all you soft and squishy nice guys out there to get in shape! Girls don't want a jerk, but it can be hard to pass up a ripped body. (The mind may be willing to refuse the temptation, but the flesh is weak! Ladies, can I get an amen?)

So fellas, don't let this hard-bodied wise guy show you up on the beach this summer! Hit the gym and take on The Situation's philosophy of G-T-L (gym, tan, laundry) and show the world that nice guys can have BUFF BODIES, too.

xoxo,

Markette

Ok guess what time it is? It's time to pick our celebrity doppelganger! And this week we chose Fashion BS co-host James Cornwell. How do you think the face recognition did this week? Check out his numero uno look-alike. I'll give you a hint: He's a musician, goes by one name like a Cher or Madonna, is a native New Yorker, and has sold over 20,000 million records worldwide.

CELEBRITY DOPPELGANGER: JAMES CORNWELL

MOBY!!!! Well, I love Moby, but James has way better bone structure.

I HEART APPLE: THE NEW iPHONE 4

Ok this phone really is going to change everything. I cannot believe the features that it has, and the most incredible application it will be running is it's face-time calling, it has a two-sided camera, 40 percent more battery, is made out of some crazy crystal titanium, is sleeker and slimmer and well in a nutshell it's just awesome. If you don't believe me or are skeptical WATCH the video below.

Ciao for now

The red carpet was hot hot hot at the Ford's Theatre 2010 gala and DC on Heels was there to catch the glitz & glam, and a few exclusives, too!

Markette and her former boss Debra Lee, President and CEO of BET
(Even though its been several years since working at BET, Ms. Lee still treated me like family when I met up with her on the red carpet. She told me she was coming from the White House, where President and Mrs. Obama hosted an intimate party before the Ford's Theatre gala).

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was awarded the Lincoln Medal at the gala.
(The esteemed South African leader was full of joy on the red carpet and his positive energy was infectious!)

We literally had to serenade Lionel Richie to get him to come over and give us an interview, but we got it! (More Red Carpet video from this event to come!)

Good Morning America's Robin Roberts and her niece - the doctor!
(There were many beautiful photos of Robin Roberts on the red carpet, but I wanted to include this one with her niece because I thought it shows that - not only is Robin Roberts a great journalist - but she's also an awesome aunt. Robin told me that her niece just graduated from Howard University Medical School and they were there to celebrate!)

Markette and Modern Family's Ty Burrell, host of "America Celebrates July 4th," airing July 2 on ABC.
(Wondering why he has that funny expression? He told me on the red carpet that he was thinking about his 4-month-old baby girl back home. She's his first child and he said he just loves her to pieces and can't stand to be away!)

Stars and The Obamas at the Ford's Gala

|
THE OBAMAS AND THE STARS ATTEND FORD'S GALA:
Markette & Vanessa were on the red carpet for the Ford's Theatre Society Annual Gala.President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were in attendance . The event featured appearances by Ty Burrell (who hosted the event) American Idol Kelly Clarkson, Renée Fleming, George Lopez, Lionel Richie, Robin Roberts, Dick Van Dyke and The Soldiers' Chorus of the United States Army Field Band. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and South African Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs received the theaters Lincoln Medal. Interviews with both of these extraordinary gentlemen to come!!! "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, sang "Everybody Got Their Something," and pop start Lionel Richie, sang "All Night Long."

Markette and Vanessa on the red carpet interviewing

The highlight of the event: Lionel Richie arrived late to the event, so late secret service and security were not sure how to let him in since everything was blocked and taped off. He wasn't going to give interviews or photos because of time constraints, (he was about 10 feet away from us) so M and I took matters into our own hands and serenaded him with "Hello is it me your looking for." (way off key by the way, but it worked!) He turned back smiling and laughing and walked over to us and gave us the only interview and photo for the night!!! There was a huge crowd around and everybody started cheering. And by the way he looked amazing. He is tall, slender, and in very good shape. He wore a modern clean polished suit. "Oh what a feeling" after scoring that interview!

Lionel arriving late...

Dashing past press and photogs

But he came back and we got an interview and photo after our off key performance. Hi-Five on that!

Tons of people at one of six corners

Crowds gathered to see the stars and to catch a glimpse of The Prez

President's motorcade

The President's car "The BEAST"

Dick Van Dyke performed a medley of songs from his children's movies. In an interview with him Mr. Van Dyke told me how earlier while at the President's house he went to shake his hand and his clip on bow tie fell off! A true comedian no matter the circumstance, Van Dyke threw out a one liner and just kept smiling.

To see more pictures of the event go to DC ON HEELS on facebook. And STAY TUNED for all of the video interviews!

Grilled Shrimp + Shark Empanadas, $23.70

grilled_shrimp.jpg
I was directed to this restaurant after arriving at Market 28, a tourist trap of a shopping center in downtown Cancun. I asked my cab driver where the best Mexican food was and he sent me to El Cejas, which literally means "The Eyebrows."

There, I was met by a straight-faced, burly man with bushy eyebrows standing behind a cash register. Apparently, he was the bean counter (no pun intended) and owner, and the inspiration behind the restaurant's peculiar name.

This marked the beginning of a culinary adventure that - although tasty -  put a serious dent into my shopping budget...

eating_shrimp.jpg
I was impressed by the main course, considering it was from a food stand at an open-air market with pictures on its menu...

shark_empanadas.jpg
And the appetizer was tasty, too!
(Deep-fried empanadas filled with shark meat -- tastes like chicken.)

But, I dunno. Is $23.70 too much to pay for a meal from a place with pictures on its menu?

What do you think? Is this a DEAL or NO DEAL? Here are some details to help you decide:

Menu Item: Grilled Shrimp and Shark Empanadas for an appetizer.

Price: $23.70

Restaurant: El Cejas

Cuisine: Mexican

Neighborhood: Market 28, Cancun Centro, Mexico

What the menu tells you you'll get: Since this is a place with pictures on its menu, it was a "what you see is what you get" type of set up

What I actually got: Seven medium-sized shrimp (shell and eyes still attached topped with a garlic sauce, a cup-sized portion of Mexican rice and steamed vegetables.

The appetizer came with three small empanadas filled with shark meat.

So what's your opinion: DEALor NO DEAL? Post your thoughts in the comments section.

Markette

DC DINING: RESTAURANT PICK OF THE WEEK
OK I'm getting antsy for a summer vacation and my next destination is Greece. I want to hop around the many different islands sipping red wine while basking in the golden sun. But since I'm not exactly boarding a plane tomorrow, I did the next best thing I could-- dinner at Kellari Taverna right here on K street. And I was not disappointed. We started off with Greek sharing plates. On the cute little dishes: grilled octopus, fried sardines, and tuna tartar.

The grilled octopus was incredible and transported me right to the islands. Then came the fish-3 whole pounds of it (to split with 2 other people). We shared the Lavraki a Mediterranean sea bass that was moist mild and tender. It was perfection to say the least. So while I may still be in the District and not quite on any islands YET, I did get a little piece of Greece right here on K Street.

But if going out to dinner or lunch is too expensive and your trying to save some cash then try cooking this super fast and easy recipe:

Soba Noodles with Ginger Scallion Sauce

It's light, healthy and cheap! I just bought some soba noodles yesterday at an asian specialty market and this is the perfect recipe to use. I recently just also purchased a rice cooker so I can cook rice with ahi tuna add a little soy sauce, ginger and wasabi and voila!!! A light and healthy meal in minutes!!! Try hitting up these markets-- they are definitely worth your while. Great prices and fast healthy food in minutes for the summer.

Ginger Scallion Sauce

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced scallions

1/2 cup finely minced peeled fresh ginger

1/4 cup grapeseed or neutral oil 1 1/2 teaspoons usukuchi (light soy sauce)

3/4 teaspoon sherry vinegar and 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste

Directions:

Mix together scallions, ginger, oil, soy, vinegar, and salt in bowl. Taste and check for salt adding more if needed. Though it's best after 15 or 20 minutes of sitting, ginger scallion sauce is good from the minute it's stirred together up to a day or two in the fridge.

Once you taste the sauce you'll know how much to add to your soba noodles, which are made of buckwheat that's packed with protein and vitamins.

Ok from oodles of noodles to just oodles of love. Check out this adorable video below.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK:
I am in love with sea otters. They have to be one of the cutest mammals on this planet. Your heart will melt when you see this video and that is why it's my pick of the week.

Sea otters are my official crush. I am in love with them.

Some facts about sea otters:
Otters are the only marine mammals to have fur instead of blubber
There are thirteen species alive today
Otters are very smart; they are only one of a handful of tool using mammals.
Sea Otters use rocks to pry abalone off rocks and to break open shells.

 Ciao for now

All the Single Ladies...

|
So apparently, the legs are the last thing to "go."

Sixty-four year old "Single Lady," Liza Minnelli gave a dazzling performance of Beyonce's bachelorette anthem in the new Sex & The City movie that was so funny, you almost forget you are watching a senior citizen shake her derriere in booty shorts. Apparently, when it comes to getting older, the legs are the last thing to go and Liza worked her best... or last asset ;)

And speaking of legs...

Vanessa Hudgens obviously knows this secret because she recently ripped to shreds a couture evening gown just before hitting the red carpet in L.A. on Tuesday.
vanessa_hudgens_sheer_style.jpg
OK, so maybe I was exaggerating when I said ripped it to shreds, but Yahoo's OMG! blog did report that she grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the dress above her knees to give it a sexier look.

What do you think of V-Hud's "D.I.Y." look? I think she pulled it off, but I wouldn't recommend trying this at home ;)
