Rihanna Comes to DC... in Wax

|
Good news for fans of Ri-Ri in the D-M-V...

rihanna_blonde_hawk.jpg
Amid a sea of large umbrellas (ellas, ellas), Madame Tussauds of Washington unveiled a life-sized wax figure of pop music superstar, Rihanna.

And DC on Heels hears that the wax version of Ri-Ri is just as hot as her real-life persona, complete with a black lace corset, blinged out accessories and a fierce pair of stilettos.

And speaking of fierce stilettos..

Everyone who was at the DC on Heels Happy Hour last Friday knows that the networking event turned into a bona fide party when the clock struck 10.

As a result, by the end of the night Vanessa and I went from "DC on Heels" to "DC in Pain" - our feet were seriously hurting from dancing in 4-inch heels all night (as evidenced in the boogie down production photographed below).

41339_424615661559_694301559_5660962_5477161_n.jpgI Facebooked about my "pedicure hangover" and DCoH fan Denise of Rockville, Md. offered up this handy advice for the next time any of us girls hit the club in stilettos:

Thanks Denise and thanks to all of our fans who came out Friday night!!!

This Friday, there will be many of reasons to exclaim T-G-I-F!

tgif.jpg
Besides being able to finally free yourself from that gray-toned box so cleverly called a cubicle, come Friday, hopefully the news media will have stopped covering le divorce of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren.

alg_tiger_elin.jpg

As juicy as the details may be, it's no shocker that Elin Woods.. er, um... Nordegren has called it quits. I mean, didn't he cheat her like a ba-zillion times?!?! Well enough of that depressing news of yet another failed celebrity relationship.

Another reason to look forward to the end of the week is this Friday night marks the kick off of the first official DC on HEELS Happy Hour at The Park.

Park-dconheels.jpg
Those who get on the DC on Heels Guest List (by sending an RSVP to dconheels@gmail.com) can look forward to free admission, a live DJ, complimentary hors d'oeuvres and $2 drink specials starting a 5 pm.

Last, but certainly not least, Friday is the last day to enter to win one of five $75 dining gift certificates to some of the hottest eateries in town!

Happy Birthday Howard Theatre and Happy Hour with DC on Heels!

|
Howard Theatre turns 100-years-old and gets reborn

100. That's right you heard it. The Howard Theatre is 100 -years -young and getting a facelift.

The theater, on T Street NW in Shaw, which launched the careers of greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye, has sat dormant and run-down for years. But that's nothing that a little TLC can't fix.

"The Howard Theatre is still alive, still has hope for coming back and being the theater it's been for so many people for so many years," said Rodney Ellis, interim chairman of the Howard Theatre Restoration Board, the nonprofit organization behind the effort to reopen the theater.

So Sunday night was a tribute to a life lived well and a celebration of the chance to do it again. The party -- with live performances -- was held at the Carnegie Library on Mount Vernon Square, which houses the Historical Society of Washington.

The restoration of the theater was made possible after the District reached a deal with local developer Chip Ellis to provide up to $15 million in grants and tax incentives for renovations. Plans call for the new theater to retain the familiarity of the past, including its historic facade, but also reflect modern times. It will have a museum and a banquet space and be equipped with state-of-the-art acoustic, video and recording capabilities. Ellis said it would also be a place that moves past its original billing as the "largest colored theater in the World." according to an article in the Washington Post.

"We want it to be a place where entertainers of all colors and creeds can come and launch their careers," Ellis said. "If we have our way it will be truly be a theater for all the people." Last year Markette and I were on-hand talking with Mr. Ellis, his family, and THE PEOPLE to talk about plans for the new theater and what it would bring to the community, if restored.

It's time to scream girls...
channeling_betsey.jpg
...Betsey Johnson - Georgetown is having a 70% off sale, RIGHT NOW!
(That's me, above, channeling my inner Betsey.)

I have been in love with Betsey's clothes for years. I remember when I first graduated from college and was planning to go to my first big evening work event, which required cocktail attire. I went to Betsey Johnson - Georgetown, back when it was located on Wisconsin Ave. near Aveda, and bought a gorgeous sequined spaghetti-strapped cocktail dress. It was flirty. It was fun and it was (somewhat) appropriate enough for a work party.

I danced with the V.P. of public relations that night... all night... I felt like the the Belle of the ball!

Has a piece of clothing ever made you feel that way?

Darn it! I can't believe I sold that dress on e-bay! What is wrong with me?!?!?

If you have a dress that makes you feel like that, then please don't give it away or sell it online. Instead, hold on to it and pull it out of your closet the next time you are having a crappy day. It will make you feel better... I promise.

And, if you don't have a dress that makes you feel like the princess you are, then come shopping with me and Jenny Z., the store manager (pictured below) on Friday, Sept. 10 for Fashion Night Out

P8140147.JPG

Betsey Johnson - Georgetown will be having a fall fashion shopping event that includes Baked and Wired sponsored "Betsey Cupcakes" and a bar courtesy of Potomac Wine and Spirit, plus live Betsey Models who will be rocking the latest B.J. fashions.

In other unrelated news....

Virginia-based Five Guys Burgers, famous for their simple menu, homemade style "boy-guhs" and Cajun fries has been named the best place to get a burger in the U.S.A., according to the 2010 Zagat Survey.

EAT PRAY LOVE

I fell in love with author Elizabeth Gilbert's book Eat Pray Love when I read it from top to bottom over a year ago. Naturally, I was so excited when I found out that Julia Robert's would be starring in the movie coming out this August.
And contrary to what the message in the book tells you to explore, I have found myself just too busy and rundown to head to the theatre to watch the movie. I also generally find it to be true that while I may devour and j'adore every detail that the author shares in a novel, the movie usually fizzles and can never hold up to the written word. Example: Dan Brown's (The Davinci Code and Angels and Demons.)

I'm hoping that this will not be the case for Eat Pray Love! In the meantime I've looked to good friend and fellow blogger Willie Waffle to share his review of the movie. Wille gave it 2 1/2 waffles.

Willie says, " Eat Pray Love is one of those movies where you know exactly what you are going to get, kinda like comfort food for your movie going soul."

But don't worry I'll be headed out very soon to go see for myself. What did you think of the movie? Did you read the book too?

And speaking of the "Eat" part of the movie, don't forget to enter to win the DC on HEELS and Dining in DC-- Ultimate Restaurant Week Giveaway contest! It's so easy and the prizes are amazing. You could win:

2. Two (2) $75 dining gift certificates to Buddha-Bar DC
3. One (1) dining gift certificate to Thunder Burger and Bar
4.One (1) $75 dining gift certificate to Sushi Rock

Kissing toads and a really BIG can

|
Finding your prince!
Finding a good hairdresser is a lot like dating. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your Prince. And when you're still in the "toad" phase--things can get awkward. There are a caveat of excuses and lies for both dating and hating your hairdresser.

"No it's wonderful, I really like it, it's different" (you hate the cut and color)
"I'll call you." (flat out lie)
"I've just been really busy" (you have absolutely no plans to ever get back in touch or call)
"Thank you so much, I'll see you later" (sayonara sucker I'm never coming back!)

Thankfully I met Tony from Salon TONY in McLean, VA. Tony was kind enough to offer me and a friend of mine his services of a cut, color, and blow-dry. I was so nervous because I thought this is going to go one of two ways. Really good or really bad, and quite frankly--I'm used to the latter. But I finally found my PRINCE! The cut, color and products were amazing. I left that salon feeling like Cinderella. No more kissing toads for me. And the proof is in the pudding. Check it out.

Before--smiling but nervous
My friend Kristin who rolled the di with me
There was quite a lot of hair to work with
Is it going to turn out ok?
BIG thumbs up and BIG thanks to Salon Tony!

MONSTER "BFC" CAN
I am staging an intervention for a friend of mine who drinks 2 of these cans a day. Have YOU seen this can?! Or as I like to call it "heart attack in a bottle"

The Monster Energy B.F.C., one can only assume the acronym beans BIG F****** CAN, which ain't no lie. This can comes in at a whopping 32 ounces and has 108 grams of sugar and 400 calories. I cannot even think of a reason as to why anybody would want to drink this! And HOW does my friend manage to wash down two of these a day? Do you know of anybody who has a bad habit like this? These Monster energy cans are ridiculous! If so e-mail us at dconheels@gmail.com

Are you ready for some football?!?!?!?

fred_davis_redskins.jpg
This week's Buff Body is none other than Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis. In the 2009 season, Davis stepped up his game as a backup tight end and special teams player to take over for injured teammate, Chris Cooley

And No. 86 keeps his bulging muscles (see arm flex in photo above) under such tight wraps, that I couldn't find a single photo of him on the Internet shirtless and showing off his six pack... and I know it's under there! (See past Buff Body of the Weeks for reference).

I caught up with Davis and his teammate, Washington Redskins defensive end Jeremy Jarmon, at a tennis match at Kastles stadium where we talked a little football and what fans can expect from the 'Skins in the 2010 NFL season. Check it out:

No word yet on whether or not the controversial defensive tackle, Albert Haynesworth, will be in good enough shape to be next week's Buff Body... but hey, he's shown tremendous improvement in the past few days by passing his fitness test, so there's still a chance ;)

DC on HEELS has learned that there's a plethora of parties between the housewives. According to an article by Emily Miller of humanevents.com the Salahi's will be hosting a separate after-party following the exclusive premiere hosted by Bravo and Half Yard productions (being held at the Madison Hotel.) The screening party is for close friends of the housewives (who will all be in attendance) and media will be limited. Either way and either party you attend... the DC Houswives will be sure to entertain. All drama aside it's just suppose to be fun lighthearted entertainment for your viewing pleasure. I can def. see a blend of Landry and Couric with a dash of Bosworth and Knowles.

Washington's dining scene heats up as Restaurant Week comes back to the District August 16-22.

restaurant_week_header.jpg"There's just a tremendous amount of excitement over D.C.'s restaurant scene right now with recent shows like Top Chef, DC Cupcakes and Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives shining a spotlight on Washington, D.C.," said Elliott Ferguson, president & CEO of Washington's tourism agency, Destination DC.

In addition to those oh-so popular "foodie" programs, D.C. restaurants are also the backdrop for the mother of all hit cable-reality programs -- The Real Housewives of DC. The show premieres August 5 and the ladies of the popular Bravo franchise have already been spotted filming in several restaurants in and around Georgetown and downtown.

Restaurant Week prices are fixed at $20.10 for lunch or $35.10 for dinner (both come with three courses)... but is eating at the same steak house as the White House party crasher-turned-housewife really worth a dub and some change for lunch?

Ferguson seems to think so: "There's no better time than Restaurant Week to see what the D.C. culinary scene has to offer," said Ferguson.

What do you think? Is this a deal or no deal?

You Tell Me
For the past six months I've been going around to different restaurants taking pictures of the food in my ongoing series Deal or No Deal. But now, I'd like to flip the script and have you tell me.

Here's how to participate:

  1. Go out during Restaurant Week and take pictures of your food.
  2. Send the photos, along with the price of the meal to me at: dconheels@gmail.com.
  3. Stay tuned to the DC on HEELS blog where I will post your food pics and discuss whether or not you got a deal.

So what are you waiting for? Check out the list of participating restaurants (www.restaurantweekdc.org) and send us your "DEAL or NO DEAL" submissions.

xoxo,

Markette

P.S. - Featured restaurants include the culinary creation of the former chef to Oprah Winfrey, Art & Soul; Acadiana, frequented by First Lady Michelle Obama; J&G Steakhouse, located inside the new W Hotel in downtown D.C.; and The Jockey Club, which is known to be a favorite of the political elite.

LEGG MASON TENNIS CLASSIC
If you saw last weeks post then you noticed that Markette interviewed Washington Kastles owner Mark Ein at the celebrity-studded Kastle tennis matches. Washington, DC is a premiere destination for tennis lovers and players.

DC on HEELS loves tennis! Markette has a killer forehand, was the captain of her high school team and plays on a league here in DC. I have been playing the sport since I was 8- years -old! I played at USTA tennis tournaments for the state of Texas and held a Super Championship ranking playing matches all over the country. I played in high school for a Doubles State Championship with my twin sister ,and went on to play for a scholarship at a D1 university.

Every year I get so inspired by these amazing tennis events and tournaments going on. Yesterday I attended the qualifiers matches at the annual Legg Mason Tennis Classic. I saw some great matches being played and I always get so nostalgic when I see the names blazoned on banners of the great tennis legends I watched growing up--Arthur Ashe, Stefan Edberg, and my all time favorite Andre Agassi.

I just finished reading Open: An Autobiography by Andre Kirk Agassi. This was truly a beautiful haunting biography that led you into the life of a tennis legend. I highly recommend this read for any of you tennis lovers. And remember: "Love means nothing to a tennis player, right?" Haha thats one of my favorite tennis quotes. Anyhow, I was fascinated to learn about the life of my tennis icon and hero Agassi, from his painful childhood to the love hate relationship he had with tennis. So get inspired and get out there now while you can to all of these amazing tennis events! The Legg Mason Tennis Classic will be running through August 8th.

Vanessa with the boys--Roddick, Del Potro, and Blake to name a few
Taking it all in =)
Players warming up
Center Court--Oh no the clouds were rolling in!
I beat the rain and was able to watch some great matches before they halted play. Can't wait to watch the finals!

So I usually have my "Heel of the week" segment where I showcase the hottest heel-- I mean we are DC on HEELS. But since I have been so inspired with all of this great tennis going on and you can't play tennis in any sort of a heel, I decided to showcase the best tennis shoe on the planet right now.

TENNIS SHOE PICK OF THE WEEK:
Here are my picks: For the boys: These are Rafael Nadal's shoe of choice, the Air Maz Courtballistec 2.3.
A new DragOnX upper breathes better, keeping feet cooler and dryer while offering good support and protection. Without sacrificing support and stability, the Courtbalistic 2.3. improves mobility with a light and flexible upper. A fast feeling shoe and an ideal choice for the serious player seeking the ultimate in performance and durability.

For the girls:
Serena Williams shoe of choice the Lunarlite Speed 2.
These shoes maintain the feather weight speed feel of the first model while loosening up the fit. The the toe box is more generous in this second generation Lunarlite Speed, the shoe maintains a glove-like feel so competitive players will feel connected to the court and their feet. The upper material is also softer and more forgiving for a comfortable ride.

Both of these shoes are available at The Tennis Warehouse along with a more in-depth review and pricing from their Website. Ok think I'm going to go hit the courts now.

Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea! What a beautiful bride your are!

Excuse me while I gush over the former first daughter. You see, I feel a special connection with Chelsea as we are exactly the same age. And while I watched her grow up during those awkward middle school years on television and in People magazine, I, too, was going through that same phase of being an awkward teenage girl with frizzy hair and unplucked eyebrows.

But look at Chelsea now! She is all grown up and has blossomed into an intelligent young woman (with degrees from Stanford, Oxford and Columbia) and a refined beauty in her own right.

Over the years, she's also been smart enough to stay out of her parents drama ("...and I think you know what I'm talkin' about") to create a path for her own life that is uniquely not in the shadow of her powerful mother and father.

I believe congratulations are in order. Not only for Chelsea being a beautiful bride and finding the guy of her dreams, but for serving as an example for and an inspiration to all of us former awkward teenage girls -- you did us proud!

xoxo,

Markette
