New Yorkers are saturated with hundreds of
street vendors around the city selling everything from knock off Ray-Bans to gas
masks. One sunny winter afternoon
in the meatpacking district where a friend and myself had just finished a
lovely afternoon tea at The Standard Grill, she lead me to a table featuring
some jewelry she wanted to purchase.
It was there I met Kevin Morrison, a jewelry designer with a rare talent
for crafting pieces that have character, thought, and passion. My favorite
piece of his collection is the ring with spikes in silver. Four months later I
had held onto Kevin's business card, impressed with his work I wanted to talk
to him more about his work and what inspires him to make such incredible pieces
of art.
As long as I can remember I enjoyed making things, but specifically I
recall being 9 or 10 when my aunt's apartment was robbed and all of her jewelry
was taken. So as a present I made her an entirely new set of jewels out of wire
and glass beads.
What inspires your pieces?
My ideas come from the world. Textures, seeds, a feeling. Some of my
pieces hold threatening shapes. This is in reaction to the threat that we all
feel-the hostility that seethes within humans..there is a peaceful way to
represent this-like cacti. Displayed.

What is the name of the spiky ring?
There are several spiky rings. Vandal6, Vandal7.5 and The Emerald
Vandal7.5...there's also a prototype that originated the line 10 years ago.
With 360 degrees of spikes it proved uncomfortable..I rarely produce these
anymore..I call it the 360Safety ring . People always react and say, "You
could really hurt somebody with this."- My reply is that you can hurt
somebody with anything at hand-anything!..a shoe, a purse..words, screams,
whatever it takes to gain safety. With the 360 you can't hurt anyone without
hurting yourself; but isn't that true generally?
What materials do you use to make the
jewelry?
I'll use anything
at hand, sometimes I'll seek but I have no special preference. Currently metal
is resonating for me. Fine or base..If something proves to be corrupted: ex:
Feathers; I will not use that. unless I discover them vintage-reclaimed. I'm
very affected by the ancient world. I like their mediums. The Sails,
stone- hammers and fire. It may have been brutal-but a departure in my mind
from a world in which people navigate with thumbs and walk around with their
pants falling down-a strange, ugly silhouette.

The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
