You've been busy lately these days what have you been up too?
Well we filmed the show last year; it was on about this time last year. Now it's being aired abroad in various countries like morocco, someone told me South Africa, it's in Australia. We don't really know what's going on with the show, I've sort of moved on career wise from it. I didn't want to wait around, wondering what would be next. So what I did was I decided to start my own company Mauvais Garçon (bad boy in French). I'm doing bow ties, because I've been wearing them for a long time. Some publication called me the king of bow ties, so I am sort of banking on that and seeing where it goes. It's fun; basically I wanted a bow tie for every event I go to. I go around I find fabric that I like, that I would want to wear, stuff that's specific. Like right now I'm wearing the Beatrice, which is made from the curtains at the Beatrice inn. I think it's a little piece of history. I don't want to use it as a launching pad for the line, but it's definitely the stand out piece because of the notoriety of the Beatrice and those times.
You've
been a well-known fixture on the New York social scene for a while. But you
gained a whole new level of notoriety with the High Society show. What were your
thoughts on the show and how do you feel you were represented?
I mean I think that looking back, reality TV, as any show stereotypes
are easy to work with. That sort of came out very strongly with my portrayal on
the show. Which I kind of felt a little uncomfortable with, because being gay I
wanted young kids to look up and see role models and not crazy people. I think
they maybe got a little bit of both, more so a little crazy.
Because
you were introduced as the page six boy.
Yeah I had a
rough spot about two years ago. I went through a big break up. Unfortunately it
was something that was dragged out into Page Six. The show sort of played that
side up. I took some time off to leave the city. My Dad lives in California and
my Mom lives in Massachusetts.
I kind of came
to the realization that I do like being out there, having my name out there, my
face out there. But if you keep a level of subtlety and poise, it runs a
lot smoother than when your jumping on tables and throwing drinks at people.
Your
Mom was on the show, what did she think of it?
She loved it. Since I was little I always wanted to do plays and move to
New York City. She's always supported my career choices, working in fashion,
working in the entertainment industry. They wanted her to come in and sort of
be the voice of reason. As unreal as reality TV is I think that that part with
my Mom and I having tea together was what I think showed a little bit of the
real Paul.
Are you still seeing the guy from the show?
God no, that was old news. We sort of started dating around that time. We did meet while we were filming the show. I know the press sort of had a field day with that relationship, saying it was a scripted relationship. It's sort of hard to go into a relationship and you've got a camera crew, ten people, producer in your ear, it's kind of hard to exchange emotions and get to know somebody. So that sort of crashed and burned. (chuckles)
The
show has had great success in syndication. But it didn't do to well here in the
states ratings wise. Why don't you think it was able to connect with an
audience?
I think it was a
number of reasons. One of them was the production company was sort of going off
of our already established social prominence, or presence. I think they were
sort of trying to build off of that. But for a show what you need is to be on
buses, you need to be on Billboards in Times Square.
Kind
of like a Kardashian.
Exactly. You can't go into a coffee shop without seeing one of them on something. I think of course the show was a vehicle for Tinsley (Mortimer) and so they didn't really focus on doing a lot of press with the rest of the characters. Granted a lot of us garnered our own press. I think America loves to see a glimpse into another world, I think it was too stand offish on TV to not have the advertisement backing.
Would you do another reality show whether it was High Society 2 or
another show?
I think I would need to sit down with an Entertainment Lawyer and get my contract hammered out so that I would know more what it would turn out like. I would never take it back. A lot of people are like "oh it didn't do well in the states" or "you looked like a crazy person." I would definitely do it again, but I don't think you could out crazy the crazy that was me season one.
I left Trinity College my junior year to move here to New York to act. But somehow I got an internship at Vogue and I worked there for about a year in features under Hamish Bowles and Stephanie La Cava. And then right before Lauren Davis got married she needed a second assistant, so I helped her out on a couple of shoots. Then after I left Vogue I started freelancing with a lot of different publications. I knew I wanted to style. It's all about personal style for me. I never think of an outfit when I get up or plan something ahead of time. But I just knew I wanted to style and freelance for different magazines. I worked with Paper, Russian Vogue, and German GQ. Paper was a lot of fun because they really let me experiment with my own personal style. Like I put Carey Mulligan in a Ninja Turtles shirt I've had since the fifth grade.
That was your shirt? I saw that picture.
Yeah, It was fun. When I was working for Conde Nast Publications it was very much you have to go with a certain look, lifestyle, chicness. Paper was fun because it was almost the opposite of that.
I felt like the Paper Magazine blog was authentically you.
It was, it was cool because it was different for me than any reporting I had done before. Like when I was college I wrote for Trinity's Journal and write really seriously. With Paper I could goof off and write about anything.
So you sort of have a much more serious background than what people
give you credit for.
Oh yeah...oh yeah.
Are you okay with that?
I'm O.K with it. I mean I went to Deerfield Academy and then onto Trinity College. Both of my parents are educators. I remember in fourth grade my Mother making me read Wuthering Heights. Almost to a point to where I always had to excel academically and be perfect in that sense. But when I finally had freedom and got to do my own thing and move to New York. I kind of wanted to be crazy and wild. That's sort of how I think everyone picked up on the phenomenon that is PJC. I think that it was this wild side. Nobody really cares about someone who can recite Chaucer in Middle English, but they do care about somebody who tosses drinks on people or get into public fights (laughs).

You take the good with the bad. I like that my close friends all know I'm in on the joke. It's not like I take myself too seriously.

I want to shift gears a little bit. I want to talk about your love
life. Are you seeing anyone these days?
Right now I am so caught up in starting my own company. You know starting your own LLC, all the paper work, the legal stuff, everything that goes into it. Choosing the right fabrics, I'm involved in every step of the process. I just haven't had time to be romantic. I did have a very good summer relationship, but it didn't last because we both have very different schedules. But I sort of have to be really self centered right now with what I'm doing. It didn't work out, but I'm still waiting. I'm kind of a big old sap when it comes to romance and love. I think the perfect person is out there. I don't like to be slutty. I know people probably think I hop in and out of bed with whomever, but it's quite the opposite. I'm quit prudish until I get into the bedroom, then the guard comes down (laughs).
Besides a busy social life describe to me what an average day is like
for you.
It's interesting because I guess you could technically still call me freelance. I write for an Australian website and magazine called Sexy Yet Polite. I have my own schedule. Most of my day involves getting ready for events at night. I try to get up as early as possible, I will go for a run at least three days a week. I'm getting my website set up. Make sure I call my Mom twice a day. I have my slow days where I can kick back and do whatever I want. And other days I am writing or running errands. I couldn't have an office job. I tried it; it's not for me.
Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have a sister out in California and she just graduated from Mills College and is into environmental science.
What's your ethnic background?
My Father is Spanish and my Mother is Scottish. People always wonder, I get a lot of different things. Someone recently asked me if I was Israeli. I get Arab all the time too. A lot of people think I'm African-American. I'm like sure, it's kind of nice I can go to any country and blend right in (laughs).
Were going to do something that I like to call the Lightening Round. First one: Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton?

I know, I love Kim Kardashian to death. I think she's a brilliant cultural phenomenon. I think she's a brilliant businesswoman. She's (Paris) the original bad girl; she's still got it in her.
Lil Kim or Nicki Minaj
I gotta go with Nicki Minaj. Because she's fresh, she's young; she's got an album. Lil Kim I love her, I'm scarred of her if she was here she'd probably shoot me (laughs). But I need some music from her!
Favorite junk food?
In & Out burger in California and here it would be Wendy's. Actually I take that back totally, Popeye's. My total weakness is friend chicken.
Favorite pop star?
Favorite pop star has got to be; I think right now I love Lady Gaga. She has become this huge star. She makes political speeches, don't ask don't tell, and she writes all of her own music. That's why I love pop music. That's why pop music is brilliant because of people like Lady Gaga and Britney.
Favorite vacation spot?
I like Gstaad, Switzerland for winter. Summer I would probably say Hawaii.
Favorite reality TV show?
I would say in the past Simple Life takes the take. I don't love reality TV that much. I was never obsessed with The Hills. I'm more of like a PBS mystery, Masterpiece Theatre type.
Favorite place to shop in New York?
Opening Ceremony downtown or Barneys uptown.
What's next for you PJC?
The near near future will be the bowtie launch and were going to do that here and in Sydney, Australia because I've got a lot of fans over in Australia, and I work for an Australian magazine. I know the fashion industry there a little bit. It'll be fun to take it out of here and see how it does in another country and then my book.
