Supernatural: We're So Screwed
Wheeee! What a thrill ride! From the opening fake news break to the ending strains of Styx, this may have been the most enjoyable episode so far this season. We were on the edge of our seats, and we loved every minute of it. Read a recap!
It started out light-hearted, a run-of-the-mill caper, with Dean flirting shamelessly and Ron talking about mandroids with laser eyes. It was light, funny, a lark. Then Ron decided to take action – a direct reaction to Sam dismissing him brusquely when they were playing FBI agents – and one thing after another went bad. The cops cut the power, Ron got shot – particularly tragic since he was just trying to do the right thing! – Dean got his face on TV, the FBI came in, and in the end, the boys barely got away by the skin of their teeth.
One of the (many) things we love about this show is how it grounds the supernatural in a very real-world setting. It makes the scares all the more enjoyable. So we love that the boys are facing real-world consequences for hunting supernatural beasties. Take Agent Hendrickson’s’ impression on the boys’ lives – to the outsider, someone who didn’t know about monsters and hunting, John does sound like the classic Unabomber loony extremist, someone who brainwashed his boys to carry out acts of terror. When Dean told Hendricks “My dad was a hero,” it made things all the more poignant – yes, John was a hero, just like the boys are, but no one will ever understand it. They’ll spend their lives saving people, but no matter how many lives they save, the police will always consider them criminals. They’ll never get to rest. They’ll be on the road, running, for the rest of their lives.
There’s always been that undercurrent in the show, and this episode brought it home. You could see the panic rising on Sam and Dean’s faces as they discovered just how bad the situation was getting. That last line – “We’re so screwed” – was absolutely perfect. You are, guys – and we almost feel guilty about how entertaining it is to watch you twist in the wind. But let’s face it, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Get more quotes from the episode!
What did you think of the episode? Do you love or hate Hendrickson? Which fight scene kicked the most ass? How do you think the boys will get out of this mess? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Hey, I was wondering if they ever play old episodes of supernatural. I've just finished season one and now I want to watch season two, but don't want to wait for the summer dvd release. Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch!

I love Supernatural!!! Dean is hot as hell and Sam is so cute and together they make one freaking hot pair (with great bodies). They're smart yet cocky...YUM! One thing though, Supernatural is going down the drain like never before. They're already repeating topics. Night Stalker...aka- repeat with a twist of Skin. Faith just got a double...i forgot the name but it just aired on February 1st. Sorry, my fellow fans, but say goodbye!

I LOVED THIS EPISODE. it was so fuuny. I love poor old Ron and his mandroids. I was impressed with how much he knew(not counting the mandroids). I also loved Sherry goin on about how awsome Dean is(but i agree 100%)I really cant wait to see how they get themselves out of this one, and what they do to the person who told the FBI about them. THere is no way that they kno all that without some help.

Gordon ratting Dean or Sam out to the Feds doesn't make sense. He doesn't have it out for Dean. He's determined to kill Sam, so why would he put the Feds up their asses? Killing Sam would be more difficult with the Feds in the way.

I rewatched this episode and there was just something about Hendrickson's statements.
"You're not the typical suspect, Dean"
Not typical? What information does Hendrickson have to classify Dean this way only after weeks of research? He may not have disclosed to Dean how much he really does know. Was John previously under investigation? Many of John's hunting related friends have died. When the boys were young children, he disconnected contact with extended family and old friends not involved in hunting. It would be difficult for the FBI to find a person close enough to the family that would have information after John "disappeared" from Lawrence, much less over 20 years later.
I don't think Gordon has a role in this. He wants Sam dead. Jail would not prevent Sam from doing what Gordon believes he's capable of.
"It's become my job to know about you"
The feds showed up at the bank too quick and with the Federal agent investigating Dean. Hendrickson KNEW Dean would be in that bank, that means he's tracking Dean through crimes. Only weeks of investigation, huh? This is another reason I'm thinking John had previously been under investigation (was it someone else's job to "know about John"). It wasn't until there was proof that Dean was alive that the Feds decided to begin investigating John's sons.
"I know about the desecrations and thefts"
For Hendrickson to combine the two makes me assume he means grave theft. The desecrations I recall: Hookman, Provenance and CSPWDT. Don't recall any "grave thefts".
Why would he concentrate on these crimes in particular? Dean had an arrest record prior to Missouri, correct? Why focuson the graves but not the rest? Is it because it relates to Hendrickson's previous statement:
"I know about the murder in Missouri. I know about your Houdini act in Maryland"
This is what makes me believe that the exhumation of Dean's grave came up empty.
Another thing: Would Hendrickson really tell Dean "everything" the Feds know about his family during their first contact? Most likely not.

Hendrickson said that he'd been on their trail for weeks, so I don't think he's been actively pursuing them for very long. I don't think that the FBI got interested in them until after they escaped custody in The Usual Suspects, since Dean was supposed to be dead in St. Louis. Dean getting arrested there in Baltimore is what got him into the FBI database, so that's what got them on the radar. After that it was just a matter of going back and connecting the dots. They look into how they grew up and find that John took off from Lawrence when child welfare was sicked on him and kind of fell off the radar, never staying put anywhere for very long. It really wouldn't be hard to paint a picture of how John raised them. As for some of the other stuff, I think a source of information could be Gordon. Sam got him arrested so I can see him trying to make a deal by offering up some information on them in retaliation.
At any rate, I really didn't see him as having an extreme amount of information on them. All he said was that he knew that John was a backwoods military type that raised them on the road in cheap motels and that he knew about the fraud and grave desecrations. He could have stumbled onto that stuff just from trying to track their actions before or after they turned up in Baltimore. Their car is not exactly common and all he'd have to do is check gas stations in that area to see if anyone recognized them and then the gas station attendant digs out a credit card receipt with a different name on it and voila, they're wanted for credit card fraud. The desecration(s), again, could have just come up during the course of the investigation as well. Or, hell, maybe they think that Dean dug up the grave in St. Louis and removed the body that was buried in his place and *that's* the fraud they're talking about. In The Usual Suspects, it was stated that the body was being exhumed and maybe when they dug it up there wasn't anything there, so they just assumed that Dean did it to cover his tracks because they think he planned it all and killed someone else in order to fake his own death.
The reason I'm thinking that Gordon may have kicked things off a bit more is because of the timing. Hendrickson said the he'd been on their trail "for weeks now" and Hunted took place recently. Of course, I have no idea how long it's supposed to have been between Playthings and Nightshifter but we do know that it had been a month between Hunted and Playthings because that's how long Sam said they'd been looking for Ava. So, I figure over a month could warrant him still using "weeks" as a reference, whereas if it had been over two or three months, he'd be more likely to say that he'd been on their trail for "months".

THE best episode to date? I adored it from start to finish. Both Jared and Jensen were awesome and acted supremely in their roles. it was nice to see Sam kick some butt and he really did make an excellent FBI agent... scarily enough!

OMG ? what an amazing episode!! Loved it from beginning to end. Never a dull moment. The writing and direction were fantastic.
Ron: Treated as as a mandroid believing quack by (FBI)Sammy. Poor guy. The actor who portrayed him did a great job. I ended up adoring Ron. He had an inner child that shined through. It was unfortunate that this character was killed, although I must say that scene was intense and emotional. Jensen?s expressions were powerful. In a way he had bonded with Ron, allowed him to be his sidekick and it seemed he may have felt (on some level) responsible for Ron?s death. Also, it was clear Dean could envision himself or Sam in Ron?s place with a bullet in his chest.
The actress who played Sherri was better and more likeable as the Shapeshifter than the human Sherri, who was a little pathetic. I was just as annoyed with the whole ?he is sooo brave? comment as Sam. She was a little too ready to give Dean a lap dance. Sam had this ?good god, get me out of this vault - now? look on his face. Priceless. The scene with SS Sherri and Dean was executed by both actors admirably.
Sam kicking FBI butt. (Go Jared) Now, he won't have to pout about not seeing his face in the FBI's wanted list. Sammy is moving up to Dean's criminal level.
Hendrickson: Trouble, trouble and more trouble for the Winchesters. He seems to know an extreme amount of information about the whole family. Wonder how long he?s been investigating them. Did it start with something John did? Or with Dean and the first shapeshifter? If he didn?t already know that John was dead, he does now. Dean referenced that his dad ?was? a hero, not ?is?. Good thing Hendrickson is as much a smartass as Dean is. They played well off each other. (Sam is Bonnie & Dean is Clyde. lol)
MAB: I think we're safe to assume that there is no body in the Dean Winchester grave. If I remember the events correctly, Hendrickson questioned Dean about how he (Dean) exhumed the body(I'd have to watch that scene again to be sure). Think back to Dean?s arrest in the Usual Suspects. His identity was proven as DW probably though fingerprints. In that episode it was mentioned that the grave where Dean was supposedly buried was being exhumed. Maybe the shapeshifter wasn't dead, therefore no body.
The ending summed up the episode perfectly. They truly are ?So Screwed?.

I think this was a really good episode of Supernatural, but when do they ever have a bad episode? It had some great twists and turns and you can hardly tell what was coming next. I love how Sam and Dean escaped the scene in the SWAT team outfits, that was soo cool. They looked hot in those didnt they, even though u couldnt really see their face.
Anyway, keep up the good work Jensen, Jared and everyone else, this is a great show!
loveeeee jensen and jared! i have to meet them some day.

Total love for this episode. Now this is the show that I love. The script, the dialogue and charaterization were all truly awesome. The direction was cinematic. Jensen as always rocked the heck out of Dean and made me love him even more if that's possible and this was Jared's best performace to date. Well done gang!

WOW What an episode. Loved Sam all the way. His facial expressions were right on the marl. Loved Renegade playing at the end of the eppy! Kudos to Jared and Jensen for one of the best episodes this season--personal favorite was Playthings!

Absolutely loved everything about this episode. There was not one thing wrong with it. & I think the ending was unbelievable. “Renegade" by styx made it a more amazing episode, that had me on my feet! ~!**GREAT EPISODE**!~

Nightshifter was a spectacular episode! From concept to script to direction, performance, editing, and music, this episode was as perfect and complete as television can be. It's no wonder that I love this series! Thank you Eric Kripke and Robert Singer for the total package; thank you Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki for two particularly superb performances in a string of incredible characterizations; thank you Ben Edlund for a rocking script with a solid mix of levity and gravitas; and thank you Phil Sgriccia for spot-on directing.
"We are so screwed," combined with Renegade by Styx, made the perfect postscript. I haven't the foggiest clue how the boys are going to overcome their real-world problems and evade Special Agent Hendrickson; the FBI has suddenly become fully as scary as the hordes of hell, and that was a brilliant move.
These days, I seem to be living from Thursday night to Thursday night. Is it Thursday night yet?

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!! I have to say, I think it was one of the best so far!! I CAN"T WAIT TILL NEXT THURSDAY!!

From Ron and the mandroids to the bank hold-up, the story was a wonderful ride. Sam and Dean going undercover never fails to amuse – not to mention Sam being stuck in a safe with a Dean fangirl…who turns out to be the last person the skinwalker turns into. Ahhh, fangirls. Issues much Kripke?
Agent Hendrickson was an interesting addition. Bull headed and stubborn …the Winchesters are indeed screwed. A worthy adversary, but I hope he isn’t stuck in the bullheaded and stubborn category for very long. Those characters, to me anyway, start of as powerful additions to a cast, but often just bore me to death if they remain stuck in that category for seasons upon seasons. I hope this character fares better than that.
One thing I am confused about, and it’s possible I missed something, but if Hendrickson knows so much about the Winchesters, why doesn’t he know that Dean is dead in St Louis? What makes him think that Dean’s still alive? I suppose he could have just dug up the grave or something…what what led him to that? I suppose it might be explained later on, but I would have liked to have seen why and how in this episode.

it is a great show but i stull think it needs a theem song but what do i now keep up the good work.

Wow. That's all I can say about this episode. Just...wow. Oh, and if I ever meet Hendricks, I might just have to punch his face in. =]

I loved this episode and plus I think the fbi dude is Gordon's brother. Great job sn crew.

I didn't think I would like this episode going into it, but I thought these guys did a fabulous job. They were able to keep the humor light (that extra long pause the guys gave when the girl fainted had me in stitches) and yet grounded the show with the real world. The last line of the episode is probably my favorite, and the fact that it was played alongside some excellent music just took it to the next level. I can't wait to see what's going to develop between the boys and the FBI. Two thumbs up in my book.

Totally agreed. The episode was amazing. IMTOD will always be No.1, but Nightshifter is very close second...To be honest, it has been a long time since I wanted to cry out loud...When the Styx kicked in I was standing... The song and the last sentence was perfect. You go, Kripke...That's exactly why we LOVE Supernatural...BRAVO!

this was the best episode ever! I was on the edge of my seat the entire show. I loved it!

YAHOO! Got to say that this was my favorite episode so far this season. KUDOS to the writer, director et al. (Also that it wasn't lit with tea-candles!)
Loved Ron...LOVED that he had it figured SO close to correctly.
Jared finally got the cast off, and could show his Winchester-ness.
Some John fans are gonna be ticked at the disrespect shown him by the FBI guy... surprisingly not me... Hendrickson has NO idea about John, what he went through, or his motivations, so for him, expressing this opinion was completely in line.
Jensen's facial expression as he claimed "My Dad was a hero." was just perfect...
I agree with Lola... this was a thing of beauty...and they are SOOOO screwed! *G*
Posted by: bev | January 27, 2007 1:34 AM
I was completely impressed on all levels... filming, storyline, actors... the whole bit.
I am wondering if there is a a connection between that FBI guy and Gordon... for leading a life sooo under radar its hard to imagine sooo much being known or them alluding that the FBI knows so much about them. Then again... here could be our XFILES tie in.... you never know.
Jared buddy (if you happen to come across this), let me commend you. Jensen normally blows me away with each episode and yes he had a few good scenes but the last 10 minutes buddy, claim it, they are yours. The fight scene was gold, really but the last few minutes in Metallicar... brilliant. The mixture of fear... the "oh shit" factor and calculating the next move... all what you needed to do and all that was done.
The Ronald parts were awesome. The scene where is dies was outstanding. I love that the show is living up to the mini "movie" of the week style they wanted.
Kudos guys BIG KUDOS and brownies LOL.
Never the less in parting I am with Dean... talk about Papa Winchester like that again and we gonna have it out.... it wont be pretty...lol

oh man i loved this episosde! throughout the whole thing i was on the edge of my seat and i was so scared about who the shapeshifter really was and if the FBI was going to catch them or not. i literally jumped when that shapshift as sherri came back to life or whatever and grabbed dean and i kept yelling at the TV to be careful when dean or sam turned a corner or opened a door lol. and it was so funny when the real sherri kept saying how great dean was poor sammy hes hot too lol. all in all it was an amazing episode def. one of the best and i cant wait for next week! this show just keeps getting better and better <333333

Fantastic episode! They're so screwed, and it's gonna be awesome watching them figure out how to work around this new guy (who's great!) and just WOW!!! Not enough that there's this Supernatural Demon working against them, the 'normal' world has thrown them a major roadblock, as well it should! That they've been noticed with all the illegal stuff they do makes the series a lot more real-feeling, because it brings back the feeling that they are operating in the 'normal' world, where such actions have consequences.
Also, the episode RAWKED!!! Way to amp up the intensity!
Great great stuff! Looking forward to future developments!

I loved this eppy! I mean action, Ron dude and Gordon's brother yes I said brother. Well I like my idea of the fbi guy anyways. Jensen, Jared, Kim and Kripke and the rest of the crew keep it up!

Agreed 100%! IMHO, second-best episode of the season (best being IMTOD). And may I say: loved the T2 reference (fave Arnold movie!) and the inclusion of my favorite Styx song! W00t. Eagerly awaiting next week Touched By An Angel repeat... or something like that.

I absolutley loved this episode, start to finish. I can't say that holds true for many, if any, other episodes for me. Most have one thing or another that takes away a little bit. Either the supernatural story falls a little flat or there's a bit too much angst or the demon mytharc is driving me insane but I have not a single complaint about this one.
I thought it built up a nice pace to it. Several shots had a very cinematic feel. Loved and hated Ron getting killed. They really made him likeable enough to really feel it when he was killed. The actor there was really good at selling this character. I don't know his name but I give him huge props for getting us to care for his character. I loved Sam's exasperation when he said; "we're not working for the mandroid!". lol. Which of course came across as a play on "workin' for the man" to me. Which added an extra chuckle for me.
Loved the very fangirlish reaction by Sherri in the vault and poor Sam having to listen to her gush. lol.
I like the FBI guy. I hope that they leave him as a straight up FBI man simply doing his job. I don't want any hidden agendas or connections to Gordon (other than Gordon possibly giving up info on the boys to get back at them) or the supernatural stuff. I want him to simply be gunning for Dean because he believes that Dean is a bad guy. There's really no need to make it any more complicated than that, as others have been alluding to on other boards.
I thought they did a great job at keeping you guessing at who the shapeshifter was and I really felt that Ron getting killed really amped the intensity up. It really reinforced just how screwed the situation was getting and when all was said and done, that ending kicked some serious butt. I love the way they blended in with the SWAT team and Hendrickson walked right by them. I had been waiting for them to use "Renegade" for some time now and they used it perfectly. Dean's delivery of "we're so screwed" and their demeanor in the car was spot on.
Sam taking out the SWAT guys was great. It's good to see Sammy kick some ass once in a while. And Dean taking on the Shapeshifter Sherri...Sherrishifter?...ShapeSherri?...lol...kicked ass, too. Seeing a female actress going toe to toe with Dean/Jensen was just all kinds of awesome.
Loved Dean having to defend daddy Win to Hendrickson. Jensen was amazing as always. Loved his reaction to Ron getting killed. Loved the slow motion/muted sound during that scene.
Huge huge props to Ben Edlund and the director of this one. Fantastic episode.
