Girlfriends: Was It a Season or Series Finale?
With all the frenzy about Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars, we almost forgot about another stellar female-fronted show on The CW: Girlfriends. The show ended its seventh season with one cliffhanger – which man will Joan choose? – but the bigger cliffhanger is, will this show be back?
Good question, and, alas, we don't have an answer. The press seems to be split -- star Tracee Ellis Ross told gossip maven Marilyn Beck that "it's leaning in the direction of good," while TV Guide reports that the show's prospects are iffy. We won't know until the upfronts next week (And remember to check out our live-blogging coverage!)
Golden Brooks also weighs in on the show's prospects in another interview, and tells why she thinks her character, Maya, has such a following: "I think everybody can connect with Maya because she speaks for the common people," Brooks explained. "She speaks for all the people who are going to vote for Barack Obama, who voted for Clinton. She's the person who cuts out coupons. She's the person worried about turning the lights off when she leaves. She's the person who is God fearing and go to church every Sunday. She speaks for the community. She speaks for society. She's not a caricature."
What did you think of the season finale? Will it satisfy you as a series finale, if it comes to that? Do you want Girlfriends to return? Let us know in the comments!

I have been watching Girlfriends since it first aired and I really enjoy this show. I love all the characters and their connections to each other. Please air a new season of girlfriends. Aaron was supposed to come back from Iraq to marry Joan and William and Monica need to have their baby and as well as Maya and Donnell; Toni Childs needs to come back to work on friendship with Joan.

I think that it would be a real loss to cancel Girlfriends. It is well written and well acted. There are no other real shows with strong female chacacters who are friends. There are fewer shows featuring strong African American characters.

hi can anyone tell me the song that Toni Childs walked up the aisle to when she got married to Tod

not giving the show a proper send off would be like a total waste of time for everyone, the cast, the producers and especially the viewers. Joan deserves to get married she needs her day. i want to see crazy Maya's face at Jabarie's graduation.I want to see Willika( William's and Monica's child)Tony would make it extra spicy.I bet with all the sex and the city movie hooplas going on what now we deserve to see the girlfriends on the big screen where Joan gets married, Maya has her child,Lynn ...(does whatever she does)Toni comes back with Morgan and make with Joan all that good stuff. There are a lot of stupid shows on tv that are returning and the people behind them should be jailed for wasting the viewers' time or at least be fined so on that note girlfriends deserve to be back

I love girlfriends, for the past few years it has been one of the few shows on television that is worthwhile. Let's face it over the past few years there have been many reality shows that makes you want to turn your television off forever. Girlfriends is a show that you never get tired of it's one of the best shows ever, come on be real it's better than friends, seinfield, scrubs, and so many other shows that were on for so many years. I am hoping that the show at least have a proper series finale instead of just leaving us wondering what happens after Joan reads the letter from Aaron. I even hoped that before the series came to an end that Toni would return and make a mends with Joan, I mean they were friends for so long and to leave the show incomplete kind of defeats the purpose of the show in the first place. I had began collecting the dvd's but really if there isn't a real finale then there is no point.

I really like girlfriends. Because it reminds me of me and my own friends. that no matter happens your girlfriends are there for you. And they really know you even if you think that someone else does not know you. Please bring it back please do not cancel it. I really relate a lot to the show.

Hello producers, the writers strike has been over for quiet some time. We want new show for Girlfriends. There are too many unanswered situations: Aaron returning from Iraq, Joan's wedding, Monica having Williams baby. Jabarie's graduation. Come on this show is a gold mine. Don't leave us hanging. Here's one suggestion have Toni come back to Joan's wedding and let there be drama........

this is not kool at all you do not just leave off on a show half way thru the season i mean if it is going to be over then let the girls leave with some class i for one love this show and it hurts me to see it go but i would have a better state of mind if it could end the right way i mean look at other shows that had an all women cast charmed they whent out with class even with rateings not being up to pare the network ows it to the fans to end the season to end girlfriends the right way if thats what they want to do but i say bring them back and while your at it bring toni back i dont care what anyone says she was just as funny as they all were and she is missed so lets so this show some justice and let them go out with style and with a bang our keep them WITH TONI so i and the other milloins of fans will keep the network make'n money cuz it is us who pays all of yall when we turn on the T.V. so we are yall boss and we say let them stay so DO IT.......................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GIRLFRIENDS DESERVE BETTER.........MODAYS AFTER WORK IS BORING.....AT LEAST A SPINOFF, AND YES LYNN HAS NOTHING, AND DID WILLIAM AND HIS WIFE HAVE THE BABY WHEN, I KNOW WHEN SHE GOES INTO LABOR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HILARIOUS. WILL MYA AND HER HUBBY HAVE A BABY OF THEIR OWN? COME ON I KNOW YOUR WRITERS ARE MORE TALENTED THAN THAT. THE WRITERS STRIKE WAS FOR WHAT?????

That was the season finale and last showing of girlfriends. I am so upset, it really was entertaining to me and alot of others as we can all see. I hope the same doesn't happen to the Game. Oh that song you wanted from Toni's wedding is from the group Shalamar - A night to remember.

Please, bring Gilfriends back. It was the only show that I looked forward to watching each week. It was like going to a Girlfriends Retreat. All black women can relate to one of those characters. Bring Girlfriends Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Paulette | February 19, 2008 3:18 PM
this is not good enough. girlfriends can not end. this leaves me blank and im pretty sure it leaves other people the same way. will jill get married, how will william's baby look, will lynn make it with her record. i mean you can not let this be it.

This CANNOT be the last episode. This is the best show on TV pertaining to African American women. I think I'm going to cry.
Posted by: Sandra | February 12, 2008 4:52 PM
Last night's episode will NOT do for a series finale. This show has been on waaay too long for that. It is an insult to African Americans in the entertainment industry and their viewers if Girlfriends is ignored and booted off of the air without the proper finale.

Hey, i really love the show and been watching it since the first episodes exploded. I think the show was a success i loved Toni and i miss her...i think you should bring her bcak but do it with a boom...it has to be very dranmatic, really i do want her back. besides the other girls she helped make the show. I love them all but i like them more together.
Posted by: Ashley | October 23, 2007 7:00 PM
Why don't they just replace JMJ with Jasmine Guy, she would make the PERFECT Toni- minus the southern accent. That would be perfect.
Posted by: Suzy | October 7, 2007 5:50 AM
I think they should bring back Toni (Jill Marie Jones). When I look at the old girlfriends programs I just have to laugh. She brought drama to the program and Monicia although she has her problems just doesn't do what Toni did

Please bring back a new season with girlfriends. And please bring back Toni. I love her. I love her attitude throughout the whole show. I love this show because this is how black women today out to act as friends whether its good or its bad. But we all need to stick together even if we don;t agree on some of the things that we do in life.

After refusing to watch the show for the first seven seasons (I assumed it would be ghetto, badly written and stereotypical), I got hooked on Girlfriends via BET weekend block episode reruns and two a day syndicated airings here in Atlanta. I've now seen every episode many times over. And on Monday nights the new episodes along with The Game, is must see tv in my house. There are so many things right with Girlfriends. It has well-developed characters you can believe, relate to, and truly care about. It's laugh outloud funny and intelligent. And for the most part shows us in a positive light. Not to mention is well-acted by five very talented, very beautiful women. (I'd totally do all of them with no complaints. Except Toni. More on her later). For me its success is because it is among the best written sitcoms in the history of television - black or white. It's our little black Seinfeld. And it's a shame that after all these years on the air it still struggles for a larger crossover audience and each year remains in limbo on the chopping block. I say this to say that after nine or a possible 10th season, it is now time to say good-bye to Girlfriends. It's hard to believe that after all these years and the departure of a major character the show in my opinion still hasn't jumped the shark. So I say get out while you can and don't ruin it. Ten years on the air especially on the tiny CW is a stellar accomplishment in the world of television. So if it didn't come back I'd be fine with that because they won't get a chance to ruin it. (Because if that corny proposal scene at the end of this season was any indication of what's to come next year, I say don't come back.)
My main hope and concern with Girlfriends is that if it does come back for a final season is that the writers don't change a thing. Toni is gone so let her stay gone. She was always by far my least favored girlfriend. (Way too selfish and self-absorbed. Reminded me of an ex. Although I must admit Toni did have some nice tig-o-bitties). And when she was written out I knew they would replace her with Monica and I knew the show wouldn't miss a beat. So don't go dragging her back force fitting her into the show when there really isn't a place for her anymore. It would be Waaaay awkward. In real life people come and go. Even if they've been in your life all your life, sometimes people just gotta go. That's what happened to Toni & Joan and it's not a bad thing for either of them. And this is why we love the show. Because it's real! We can see ourselves on tv. It resonates with our lives. Too often during the last season of a show the writers try to answer all the unanswered questions and squeeze in all the plot lines they couldn't during years past in an effort to please the fans. It's a huge mistake. Which is why the last episodes of shows tend to be the worst. So hopefully they won't change a thing and there will be no crazy plot line twists. Hopefully there will be no William jumping over a shark tank on water skis in a leather jacket in order to win Monica back. (although they need to get back together because she's being totally ridiculous with her sexy self.) Hopefully Lynn will continue to be the bohemian super-freak searching for herself and slowly finding her way. Hopefully Maya and Darnell won't win the lottery like they did on Roseanne and just remain real folks trying to make it and doing well. Hopefully Jabari won't be a new actor (again) suddenly five years older with a mustache about to graduate from college. Hopefully Joan will be Joan. Still searching for the right man. Still looking for success in love. Hopefully they won't Spend the last season building up to some big Joan wedding only to drag Toni back in the last episode and then have William (again) suddenly realize that he an Joan belong together and "Surprise us" by interrupting the ceremony and proclaiming his love. (Where have we ever seen THAT before?). Any of those shenanigans would just be a huge let down. So hopefully there will just be episodes. Funny, well-written episodes that make us laugh. Real life doesn't wrap-up in 30 minutes so why should a tv show just because it's the last one. Even in the world of sitcoms, life goes on. So do nothing special. Just let it end. Learn a lesson from the Sopranos. There is nothing to be gained from new outlandish plot lines, answering all the questions or bringing old characters back. Just let the show end. And we can all answer all the unanswered questions in our own minds and debate the possibilities for years to come.

everybody who watches this show has been waiting for joan to find the rite man and get married, for toni to come back and to be in the wedding,to see maya and darnell finally make the business work, for lynn to finally be committed to one man and for william and monica to get back together,so i hoping and praying that i have seen the last season atleast give us the plesure of seeing everybody meet up at joan's wedding

I don't want to sound like a broken record but I completely agree with everyone's comments. I will not be satisfied with the season finale being the series finale. We have to see Joan get married (Toni MUST be in the wedding) and we need updates on everyone's lives. My girlfriends and I can all relate to atleast one of the characters in some way. Girlfriends is such a phenomenal show...PLEASE bring it back for another season!!!

i was very upset when toni left the show but, how ever; i have been seating on my couch to see when the next show was going to come on and i havent saw it yet so i thought to google if there was gonna be another season of girlfriend and i mad about itbecause its not. i used to put girlfriend one reminder evry monday and record it. i guess i have to laugh at all the epidsodes i recorded. without gitlfriend cw50 is gonna be boring. i love all the characters and their own little way.ecspecially mya (GOLDEN BROOKS). SO PLEASE I'M BEGGING LET THERE BE ANOTHER SEASON OF GIRLFRIENDS. I THINK IT SHOULD RUN FOR 10 YEARS LIKE GOOD TIMES, MARTIN, SANFORD AND SON, COSBY SHOW, FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR, AND SO ON. IF NOT I'M HERE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT ALL SEASONS WERE GREAT I REALLY ENJOY THE SHOW.

I love Girlfriends!!! Beacause of Girlfriends, Monday Nights became somewhat of a spiritual retreat for me. I feel as though I have a connection with all of the characters. By the way, I've purchased the first season already and can't wait for the others to follow.

you have to keep girlfriends on because I call Monday nites off from work all the time just to watch girlfriends and the re-runs on the weekends sets my weekend's right, also me and my boyfriend do not argue when girlfriends comes on lol

Please, please, please bring Girlfriends back for another season. As many others have said I will be extremely disappointed if it goes off air. This is one of the only shows that I really can relate to. It is good to see successful black women on television and it proves to others that we don't all fit the stereotypes. I believe Toni should return also, although her character can be a little annoying it evens out the cast.

I WOULD DIE IF GIRLFRIENDS GOES OFF THE AIR FOR GOOD. I LOVE THIS SHOW FINALLY A SHOW OF POSITIVE AFRICAN AMERICANS GOOD JOB CW11 FOR PICKING UP OUR SHOWS AND SUPPORTING MY COMMUNITY!!! PLUS I HAVE TO SEE JOAN FINALLY GET MARRIED AND TONY RETURN AS HER BRIDESMAID.

I would love to see another season of Girlfriends. Just as everyone else says, Toni has to return so that she and Joan can mend their friendship and it would be wonderful to finally see the dream wedding that Joan is always talking about.

Girlfriends is a great show I enjoy watching. It should be back in Fall 2007. It really speaks volume for all women. The issues the friends dealt with is very much prominant in all society. One way or another we all can relate and understand.
Please bring Toni (Jill M. Jones) back. The show is very entertaining.
Posted by: sophie | June 14, 2007 8:47 PM
Just like everyone else is saying you can't end a show without bringing Toni back! this show have reminded so many women of there friends it's an unviversal theme and a cultural experience of sister hood and not bringing Toni back would be very upsetting because she plays a major role in the show. Monica character has changed from the begining and but she could never replace Toni. I fthat is the last episode it would break the hearts of fans of fans who have been watching since the show first came on.
Posted by: Krystin | June 7, 2007 1:00 PM
The last show of the season will not satisfy me as the series finale. We have all waited 7 years or for Joan to get married and wear that tired old wedding dress she keeps in her closet. I would love to see Toni come back and be a part of Joan's wedding. And i would love to see her reaction to the girls taking Monica on as her replacement as the fourth girlfriend. Girlfriends is one of the most positive african american shows on television that every woman can relate to no matter what their race. Sure they characters have issues, but they are real life issues that some of us deal with everyday. Every episode is like a breath of fresh air, and helps you realize that a real friendship can stand the tests of time. PLEEEEEEAAASSSEEE dont let that be the end of Girlfriends.... There will be alot of very disapointed fans if it is.
Posted by: shavonn | June 7, 2007 2:08 AM
You are all so right. I was all ready to break down crying when Toni walked out of the door in the end and then she didn't. I was sad! Please make the last season the best! Get rid of Monica, let Joan have a fabulous wedding to Sean (he was her favorite boyfriend of mine), Let Toni come back and marry Idris Alba (kick shorty to the curb), and let Sivad say Lynn is the one, and Mya can just keep doing her! Love it, it has to happen!

I hope Girlfriends comes back. Even before the Dvd came out, I recorded every last episode of the show and I watch it with my girlfriends. On a side note: It's time recast Toni. I love Ms. Jones, but Toni is too good of a character to lose forever... just something to think over.
Posted by: Angel Mcneil | June 3, 2007 9:18 PM
The seanson finale of Girlfriends was beautiful with all the characters coming to wish Joan. I expected Toni (Jill Marie Jones) as the last to come, but I was disappointed. This is a great show and I am an avid watcher. Not too many quality shows out there with a positive image. I have watched Girlfriends when it began and I will watch it until it ends. It can never end if we all purchase the DVD. We can always watch it in syndication. Great show. So much more to tell. Please don't let this be the end.
Posted by: Paula Tonka | May 30, 2007 3:55 PM
Please don't let this be the final episode. I really love Girlfriends. I agree- it can't end without Toni and Joan making up, Lynn growing up, Maya writing more, William and Monica getting married. The list goes on and on.
Posted by: mmmpossible | May 27, 2007 9:32 PM
Please Please dont let that be The last show I am The Number1 Fan of girlfriends I have every show ON MY DVR and me and all my girlfriends watch every week on Monday nights and any repeats, I would just Love to watch Joan get married Thats where the show started. Thats what this whole journey has been about. I would love to see mya have her baby, Lynn Finally grow up William become a real daddy, and not just the uncle/dad of his sisters lesbian lover, and I will Die to see Mrs.Toni Childs Garrett and little baby morgan come back and befriend Joan again. If not just for me Please do it for all the other sistas out there that NEED Girlfriends to relate to!!!

This show has been a learning experience for me, in that I get to understand what women think about various issues. It helps to uncover for me my mate's thoughts and feelings that she will not disclose to me.
Keep Girlsfriends on!!
Posted by: Jacob Simmons | May 18, 2007 11:21 AM
like every one else i don't believe the show should end that way and if the cw doesn't bring back the show they should at least do a final episode where jone gets married, and there's a shot of everyone i hated how the ended gilmore girls luke and lorelai should have gotten married and maybe rory too they forgot to include rory's dad I loved gilmore girls but i thought that ending needed more like in girlfriends the whole journey is for jone and lorelai to find true love and finally marry don't ruin another ending for me please
Posted by: patty | May 18, 2007 2:58 AM
No, this finale will not satisfy me because there was so much left hanging. As to last season's finale, I would have been satisfied with its ending being a series finale, but this season's finale was to unacceptable to be a series finale.

I hope Girlfriends is not going off air. Me and some of my close friends have started a girlfriend club. We look forward to every Monday. This is the only time I watch TV. I hope this is not a series final so we can enjoy this show for a few more seasons.

We have been waiting for year for Joan to get married. And it would be a disgrace for all the Girlfriends fans and I speak for all the fans of girlfriend who won't get to see that happen. If you won't bring girlfriend back for an eight season the producers should do and extra dvd showing Joan getting married. PS I would love to see Tony and Joan make up, and show up for Joan Wedding.

I love girfriends I convince my job to get a tv since I work at night to see the show. I watch it all the time and so much is going on now. I wanted to cry when Joan was proposed to I was really happy for her. And what happened to my girl Tony. PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE DON'T TAKE MY SHOW OFF NOW OR LATER. I REALLY WILL MISS THIS SHOW. BUT I DO THINK THIS SHOW SHOULD RUN AS LONG AS THE SHOW "FRIENDS" AND OTHER SHOW THAT RAN FOR 1O YEARS OR MORE PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I am a Girlfriends series junkie!
I was so exited to see that Joan finally got her true love.
Lynn did sorta find herself in her music and seems to have a steady gig now but she still is not completely on her feet. However, that is the beauty of her character. You never know what to expect.
Also, the fact that Maya is having a baby definitely makes things more intriguing.
I also think that Toni could have been at the wedding. She does not have to be written back in but it would have been a nice surprise ending to that episode.
By the way, why wasn’t’ Monica and William there? I guess it would have been weird since the party wasn’t for them as they had expected. But since they just got back together that is another reason why it can’t end yet so; please keep it going! There is too much to tell!

It can't end like that! Not w/out Toni!

I think it could serve as a series finale seeing as we have gotten less from shows when they never came back due to the CW coming into existence. If it is a series finale I would have liked them to show the happiness of all the characters not just 3. Lynn was left out...no man, no job, no home.. nothing. I understand why Toni (Jill Marie Jones) was not included in the marriage proposal but we could've gotten an update on her fictional life. Maybe I am just too picky. I just hope the show didn't end there so that the characters' lives can be finished properly.
