Smallville: Back to Black (and White)
You know what? We loved ‘Noir.’ We were undecided when we heard about the concept, but it turned out to be a blast. Who woulda thunk it?
We love that Jimmy’s a film noir fan - the boy’s got taste. We loved even more how everyone threw themselves into their film noir roles, right down to Lana’s husky femme fatale purr and Chloe’s snappy, bullet-fast banter. And boy, didn’t everyone look spectacular in black and white? It almost makes us want to do our hair in a Veronica Lake wave, grab a fedora and start spitting out our conversations through clenched teeth. They just made it look fantastic.
We loved Jimmy’s version of events: Lana as the double-crossing femme fatale, Lex as the ominous, doomed bad guy, Lionel as the duplicitous bartender, Chloe as the spitfire girl reporter, and Lois as the gorgeous other woman, Clark as bumbling reporter by day, smooth (if nefarious) crimefighter by night. But his best creation? Jimmy himself, as the best darn reporter in all of Metropolis. He was just relishing the opportunity to be the hero, even if it didn’t end well for him. Because of course Jimmy sees himself as the star of the show. It’s his dream, right?
And then there was the present-day mystery of Lana double-crossing both Lex and Lionel to deliver news of Lex’s army to the media. We were impressed at how Jimmy figured things out - even from the beginning, he was questioning why Lana would be at the Daily Planet, and why she’d be hanging out with Lionel instead of Lex. And we liked how Lois figured out something was up with the cigarette case, even though we’re not sure lifting evidence from an active crime scene was necessarily the best move. Still, watching her confront Lionel when she realized Lana had pulled one over on him was pretty satisfying.
What did you think of the Lana/Chloe conversation at the end, when Lana admitted she was forced into marrying Lex so she could be Lionel’s mole? (And have we mentioned lately how nice it is to see our villains be, you know, villainous? Love!) Oh, Lana, trying to protect Clark… We liked how Chloe called Clark on being pissed that Lana would keep secrets from him, but we appreciated even more that she let Clark figure out for himself what was really going on. This should make things interesting.
What did you think? Did you like black-and-white Smallville, or did you prefer the present-day scenes? Will Clark confront Lionel directly, or will Lex figure things out and beat him to it? Did Jimmy impress you this episode, or does he still strike you as a kid? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I loved "Noir". Excellent throw-back to the 40s and B&W films. The director did a fantastic job depicting that era accurately. AA, AM, TW, and JG were amazing.
Jimmy might have some pretty outlandish theories (Lex and the Egyptians?) but he really sees the people around him clearly. Lana as the femme fatale was appropriate. Even in RL Jimmy was quick to realize that Lana is a "double-crossing, two-timing, backstabber". Dream!Clark was a gorgeous! Sadly even in Jimmy's dream he's obsessed with Lana. Ugh! At least at the end of the dream he realizes that Lana isn't all that and shoots her. Too bad RL!Clark will never be allowed to move past Lana.
"Lois" as a nightclub singer? Makes sense. She's certainly no reporter.
Lex and Lionel competing for control of the town? Loved it.
I absolutely loved the interactions between Clark and Chloe. The "Clark Kent with a K" scene was hilarious. The catch was both romantic and funny. "What fun would that be?" Joking, sweet Clark is always welcome. Perfect.
"Lois"' stealing evidence from the crime scene was interesting. I'd have thought that she'd want the guy who shot her friend (Lana) to be caught and put away - but I guess a story for the Inquisitor has priority and justifies sabotaging the police investigation. Hey, but now "Lois" has stumbled blindly onto Level 33.1. Eh, whatever.
The ratings were really disappointing but not unexpected. The season took a drastic 180 at the end of "Labyrinth" and culminated with the crap that was "Promise". Every single character's integrity was assassinated to revirginize Lana Lang and bring back the Clana and Clexana. Yes, CW, what an action adventure superhero show needs is more triangles with the two leading males salivating after Lana Lang. Good call. *sarcasm* With any luck next year Smallville will once again focus on Clark's journey to becoming Superman, Lex Luthor's journey to becoming Superman's arch-enemy and Chloe Sullivan's journey to become the best investigative reporter at the DP. Dare to dream!

I really have nothing to say about this episode. It was a waste of 60 minutes. I use leave work early to watch Smallville and would tape it and watch it. Now I don't care to see another episode or another season. I am done. Sorry Tom Welling

personally, i thought the episode was way better than i expected. when i saw the previews, i was kinda worried and not excited. but when it actually played, it flowed together well && i really liked how it all connected to the storyline kinda like a foreshadowing. it was a nice change from the typical episode. && all you viewers who are complaining... why are u still watching? and if you dislike it so much, why are you wasting your time getting on here to complain about it?? just turn off your tv && get over it.. SV is a GREAT SHOW && if you can't see that then get over it & don't put it down for the rest of us. Personally, I think this has been the best and most intruiging season yet!!!! & season 7 will be even better so i can't wait!

I loved Noir!
the dream? Chloe was the only girl to meet Bumbling reporter Clark..and it was an iconic meeting that we usually see w/Lois and Clark (see Superman: the movie) I LOVED it. I love it even more when we find out it was all an act, the bumbling shy reporter act, and he purposely touched her breasts ;)
the catch? OMG so beautiful. Love those two..and again reminiscent of a Superman catch of any Lois Lane ;D
Love when the show has these great moments with Chloe and Clark.
Disappointed we didn't get a Chloe/Clark kiss and that Chloe/Jimmy is together (seriously, chloe/jimmy are not a good match).

Here, Here, Jamillia! totally with you on that! i always find it incredibly hysterical that people who bitch about how bad a show is still bother to watch it! why people watch shows they don't like -- now that's funny! if ya don't like the show, don't watch and waste your time. life is too short.

I didn't even bother with this episode. Chimmy is made of *suck*. Both characters are far more interesting on their own than they've ever been together. Forcing a relationship between them just makes me loathe Jimmy even more for ruining the Chloe from season 5.
BTW, the new Prototype radio ads give us no hint of the Superman this show is about in them. Instead, the marketing department seems to have made Clark into another FOTW obsessed with Lana. Well, it figures. He's been that since Promise aired. I expect nothing but Clexana until the end of the season. It's why I'm not bothering to tune in for the finale. Nothing I know makes me want to watch. Instead, I'll be counting down the minutes to the Supernatural finale. Now *that* will rock.

This episode was ok. TW was freaking gorgeous. They should have him in a wifebeater at least 5 times next season. Seriously. His biceps are freaking huge! Good golly.
The director did an awesome job. Some parts of the episode I did enjoy was Chlark @ the DP in Jimmy's dream. Best scene in the episode. To me anyways. I liked how Clark was coppin a feel and Chloe just enjoying it. I loved the car chase. Chimmy was bearable. Bleh. I loved JG, AA, and AM in this episode. You could tell JG was having fun with this. Didn't mind the Clana kiss because all I saw was TW's big ass biceps! Speaking of TW did I mention he was looking all kinds of fine. Ok what else did I like..... I think that was about it. Everything else was kind of boring.
One more thing Chloe and Jimmy need to end. I'm not feelin it at all. This was probably the first episode I actually got a boyfriend/girlfriend vibe from them. Which sucks because it's AA's last episode. And where the hell was AoT. She would have looked gorgeous in a fedora. Shame on the PTB. tsk tsk tsk.

Noir was all over the map and didn't quite tell a consistent story. Noir is somewhat similar to Relic. Relic from Season 3 was much better. The music and storyline in Relic really worked well. There was more passion, drama and well written dialogue in previous seasons. Noir is typical of Season 6, the writing and character development just are not up to the standard of previous seasons. I miss the old days of Smallville.

Gorgeous looking episode! Kudos to director Jeannot Szwarc and the set and costume designers.
(Could have done without yet another Lana hospital scene though. And her sling kept switching sides!)

For me Thi is the worst episode I had ever seen in the history of Smallville, I almost turn off the TV.

i didn't think it would but this episode worked for me. conceptually (B&W) i thought it was great and 'noir' remained germane to the present storyline. the acting, however, was not as balanced and consistent as i would have liked, whether by design (i.e., director's wishes) or just plain bad acting (i.e., there were scenes where the acting was just weak and disappointing) perhaps due to insufficient rehearsal or blocking? i'm not a fan of any particular actor on this series but i am a fan of the writing. (although john glover and michael rosenbaum are the most consistent and stellar of the lot.) the writing for smallville has always been phenomenal (for the most part). of course i'm wondering how the series will eventually end. i await it with bated breath.

It will be interesting to see how the final season episodes of Smallville do.
However, it seems as though "Veronica Mars" ratings might also be low this week. Mostly, I believe, due to the long Hiatus, because it was a great episode. If the following VM episodes stay as good, hopefully their ratings will start to go up. The CW's promotion and handling isn't really helping anyone though.

I am so happy that I avoided it. (Remarkably, it's getting even easier to do...especially after avoiding last weeks episode) And judging from the various internet Smallville message boards that I've visited, it's a good thing that I did.
Besides, VERONICA MARS MORE THAN MADE UP FOR IT!!!!!!! WHAT A GREAT VERONICA MARS EPISODE THIS WEEK!!!!!!
SCREW SMALLVILLE!!!!!!!!
And how about them Smallville ratings huh. About the only good thing to say about them is that they're consisitently going in one direction.......down.

Yeah, I noticed the badge right away, that was cute and yes, Clark was handsome and suave in Noir. Overall I did not like the episode, it was not what I expected, Lana was horrible as the double-crossing femme fatale, she needs to hold on to this show until it ends because she is done after this show. I am truly getting sick of her pathetic self. On another note, i believe the character to be written off the show next is definitely Lionel Luthor. You ask why? well pathetic Lana's chance to die was last night, but as usual she miraculously survives, so sorry non-Lana-fans, she will be back for one more sorry ass season. Lex finds out that Lana is spying on him for Lionel and Clark finds out that Lionel was the reason that Lana married Lex, need I say more!!!! I hope the last two remaining episodes are good or else they will lose me as a viewer. Lois just showed up from out of nowhere, I guess they felt that they needed to end her hiatus.

I think this was a very well played episode. I too was unsure of a 'b&w' episode, but the writers and director did a great job on it. I have grown a bit tired of the same dialogue style in smallville and felt it was a nice change. I would hope that the writers of the show expand the dialogue style of each characters. What I mean by that is I have not seen much of a change from when the characters were in high school up to were they are now...adults. I'm sure I speak for many other fans when I say I like the direction the story is going. Lex is a real bad@$$, we just dont get to see the whole picture of who he is..yet. I really hope that before the show has ended, we see how evil Lex truly is. Clark needs to get a real job as, Jimmy Olsen puts it. His clothes need a major upgrade, the plad shirts, and blue & red farm jackets need to go. Thanks!

Did you also notiCe that the badge Clark showed Jimmy was in the same shape and type as the Superman symbol?
