Supernatural News: Kripke Speaks!

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is finally speaking out about the two new cast members, doing some damage control and trying to soothe fans’ fears. “[F]ans, I love you all, but stop worrying,” he tells TVGuide’s Michael Ausiello.

Now, about that hated word, “regular.” Here’s what Kripke tells TVGuide: [T]he perception online, because I read online as much as anybody, [is] that suddenly the show is going to be Scooby-Doo. And that it's going to be Sam and Dean with these two girls in the backseat of the Impala, and they're going to cruise from town to town, they're going to do a little go-go dancing, and then they're going to fight some monsters. That is not the case. The girls are recurring regulars… which means that our contracts with them, tops, puts them in 12 out of 22 episodes. That's tops.”

OK, we love the Scooby reference, and we’d pay money to see some Winchester go-go dancing. But we’re mostly just thrilled that Kripke answered the “regulars” question the way he did.

Kripke also puts the kibosh on “love interest” talk: “We are not turning into One Tree Hill with monsters — I swear. I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.”

[We’ll pause to let OTH fans register their outrage. Moving on…]

“They're not being introduced as love interests; they're being introduced as antagonists… [Exec producer] Bob Singer and I always said to ourselves in Season 2, if we were to bring girls into the show, the way to bring them in is to make trouble for the guys, not to be helpful. To introduce them as their own fleshed-out characters in their own right, who are raging pains in the ass, and trouble, and dangerous, and then sort of see what happens. I've already broken the first 10 episodes, and, so far, there's nothing even close to romance. It's closer to they're going to come to blows with each other.”

OK, good, that’s promising. We can’t help but think the plot of just about every single romantic comedy out there is “Boy meets girl, boy hates girl, boy suddenly realizes he loves girl, audience fails to be surprised.” But we’ll trust Kripke on this one – “[H]onestly, I swear, at this point, I don't have plans for the girls to pair up with the guys. They might. But until I see who works best with whom, I'm just not going to pull that trigger.”

Kripke also talked with iF magazine, covering a lot of the same ground, but dropping some more hints on what’s to come in Season Three. For example, he spins a convincing argument for why fans should embrace the demon war direction: “Quite frankly, the danger with an ongoing mythology that goes for too many years is that it starts to fold in and collapse in on itself. So, it’s very satisfying to end a storyline and lead it organically into a new storyline for the next season. …It’s a more exciting story than we’ve dealt with before because war has begun and we’re living in a war time season. We always aim for the mythic storytelling of LORD OF THE RINGS or STAR WARS, and we finally have reached the point where the chessboard has been set and its time for all of the big battles to begin…. In a way it’s a much cleaner mythology than the yellow-eyed demon and what his plans are for Sam and what the psychic children are here for. Now its wartime to choose a side, fight, and that’s what’s at stake.”

He also spills a bit more on the new (RECURRING) regular players: Ruby is a nasty hunter, which we knew, but she also has a “shocking secret” that will be revealed around episode two. We have our guesses, what are yours?

And Bela, she’s a mercenary – she’s not in it for the greater good. “All of these amulets and all of these occult objects that the boys find to stop these creatures are very valuable to the right people and so she is a thief more than she is a hunter. So say the boys need an amulet, but she’s absconded with it. So she’s much more of that Humphrey Bogart model of not being interested in the altruistic, revenge-minded, or heroic motives all of the other “freaks” have; she’s in it to make a dollar. There’s no good and evil. There are just market forces.”

Kripke also spills a bit on the characters we know and love who we’ll see again: Gordon, Bobby (yay!) , Ellen, (double yay!) and Agent Henricksen.

OK, between the interviews, the soothing words, the and the hints about next season, we’re in a much better mood. What do you think? Did Kripke make you more confident about the upcoming season? Or do you think it’s lies, all lies, and the show is going to hell (in a bad way)? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Dear Siara,

Smarten up.

Your tone is abrasive and dismissive. The fandom is not a doormat, required to swallow any damn thing that comes down the pike. Most of the Supernatural fandom is intelligent, creative and very sharp. We will not follow if we think we’re being led down some rabbit trail, complete with pot holes and dead ends, or worse, to the edge of a cliff in the Grand Canyon, then pushed off without a parachute.

Telling people who disagree with you to “grow up” is condescending and provocative. If anything, statements like that just make people defensive. It implies that anyone who dissents from your view is immature and childish. It is one thing to disagree with someone’s opinion and say so, but to summarily dismiss their opinions out of hand as juvenile and invalid is patronizing and self-righteous. Your opinion carries no more weight or validity than anyone else’s. We are ALL entitled to our thoughts and feelings regarding our beloved show, without being insulted or belittled, thank you very much.

This wasn’t/isn’t just some small, inconsequential change, like Dean changing from peanut M&Ms to regular M&Ms or Sam getting a haircut. This change was/is MAJOR and had/has the potential to turn the show’s dynamic completely upside down. Until Kripke finally broke his silence and offered details and reassurances regarding these two new characters, we had/have every right to question and/or panic about the addition of TWO NEW REGULAR FEMALE characters to a two-male-leads-only-buddies-on-a-road-trip show. The whole premise of the show is based on TWO MEN and their story, not some sitcom or soap opera ensemble. These females were/are seen as potentially a direct threat to the very integrity, fabric and direction of the story. Read any of the hundreds of threads and thousands of posts and letters regarding the fandom’s logic and reasoning for their initial alarm. The vast majority of us are not brainless, hyper, squeeing fangirls. Supernatural’s formula and format are unique and we want to keep it that way.

Even with Kripke’s multiple recent interviews (which have set my heart and mind considerably more at ease), I, for one, will keep a close eye on these two new characters, till I’m confident that Kripke has indeed backed up his reassurances to us with solid action and proof of his intent. I have every great expectation that he will.

The sudden casting of two new regular females hit the fandom like a bombshell. With NO explanation or clarification from either the CW or Kripke, fans were basically left to their own theories and speculations, most of them not good, for almost six weeks. And can you honestly blame them? In two seasons, nothing of this magnitude had ever been put forth.

As the ‘end consumers’ of this show, we have a vested interest in its integrity and direction. We have huge emotional stakes in the Winchesters. It is a testament to Kripke and Co. that we do. However, even Kripke and Co. is not infallible.

You stated that “bitching about the new changes won't do any good”. I will tell you that you are flat out dead WRONG.

Apparently, this fandom is grown up enough and smart enough for Kripke to take seriously, even the bitching. Maybe especially the bitching.

Jo came...the vast majority of us didn’t like her (for many well thought out and articulate reasons)...Jo went. Likewise, the Road House went up in flames. Kripke listens. Kripke gets it. I have every reason to believe that he’ll continue to do so.

Incidentally, on the same note, Peter Johnson, co-producer of Supernatural and author of the Supernatural: Origins comic, also took this fandom’s valid complaints about the many glaring factual errors in the comic so seriously, that he has publicly stated that he will make corrections.

How’s that for the power of constructive, well-placed and effective bitching? We respect and love Kripke and he clearly respects and loves us. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t value our opinions.

All in all, Supernatural fans generally bitch and complain very little; we are very much an enthusiastic, adoring and easy going fandom. In two years, up till now, Jo and the Road House has been our only major complaint. Pretty stellar, both on Kripke’s side and ours.

We passionately LOVE Kripke and the ride he’s taken us on so far and can’t wait for more of the boys’ heroic trip.

The SPN Fandom

I'll give the new girls a shot. They could work out alright. If they don't, well... we'll just have to hope that they get murdered by an angry Gordon or attacked by some monster and spend the rest of the season in a coma. I didn't mind Jo, I thought she was alright most of the time. Let's see more of Bobby and Ellen. They rock! And hey, would somebody mind telling me who Missouri is?

Y'all know that at some point in the series... the guys probably will hook up? We can't leave them wandering around aimlessly fighting demons forever... give them a bit more strife. As much as I love the brother dynamics... adding in a femae interest would add to the show... not take away. There'll still be tons of brother angst...

"Grow the hell up."

Siara,

Why would you address SPN fandom as a whole on this comment?

Just wondering....

Dear SPN Fandom,

Grow the hell up. Kripke has given us nothing but amazing episodes for two years strait, and at one mention of change, fans either jump ship or attack the establishment. Bitching about the new changes won't do any good. Just CHILL and see how things go, come October 4th.

Roxanne: I second that Missouri should be brought back!!

I want to remind some that the 12 episodes is a contract maximum, but not a total guaranteed number. Bela was originally going to be in 2 episodes, now there is the potential of 12 episodes but she may only be in 6 or 7. Having this character in too many episodes will begin to get repetitive. Remember she's a thief. Strategically placing her in episodes is key without overdoing it. Running into her on the road too many times will not be believable.

Ruby, that's a tough one. If fandom doesn't begin to accept the character, I figure Ruby will be fased out during the second half of the season. Honestly, I don't know if this character will bring anything interesting to the story. We already have Gordon. No disrespect to Kripke, but I don't see why a female "Gordon" is needed. Maybe it will become clear later. Then there's Katie. I don't know if she can handle this role. For now, I'm skepical regarding Ruby.

Casey: I agree with you about Jo and would rather take my chances on these new characters. What made Jo look worse was the comic book, which stated that Jo was near Dean's age. Jo being 27 spiked her immaturity to a new high. I thought she was 21/22 and looked 15/16. (no offense to Alona)

kewel love ur show hope you make a 4th season

yea been watchin 2 years ur show rocks hope you do u 4th season of supernatural

Kripke is the man!!!

im sooo excited
but i got to say i love one tree hill

Meg - Bela might be OK for a recurring 2 or 3 eps, but 12!!?? That's way too much to ease her in and basically is a dead giveaway that this character's been brought in as a 'love interest' at some point. It too much change for this show - and for the wrong reason. Recurring ok, regular NO.
And there's also Ruby's 12 eps don't forget!

Ugh.

ok so the only thing i didnt like was the ONE TREE HILL comment but anyways i just have one thing to say CAN U PLEASY PLEASE BRING BACK JO I LOVE HER LOL but im not like every one else im siked that theres gonna be new character two new girl coz i know that dean will probably hit on one of them lol and its gonna be HILARIOUS anyways gotta run buh-byes

Love the comments about Jo. SO TRUE! I'd welcome her back if it meant not having to deal with the new chicks. Ugh. I am so sad. 12 episodes? That is a TON of episodes. Nothing's ever going to be the same. Such a bummer. Why don't you just bring Jeffrey Dean Morgan back and KILL HIM AGAIN?! That would really drive the stake in all the way (no pun intended. ;)

i do agree with Alea...that the show is generally centered around Sam and i think that Dean's story needs to come out more. I also want Jo back...i thought she was great.

i am still a little concerned for the new girls in the new season, but i will give them a chance

i am so excited for the new season!! cant wait!!

Well I don't want Jo back. I already know I don't like that character, and there's no fixing her so I will. These 2 new additions, are at least still up in the air on that.
This interview in some ways made me feel a little better, but in some ways, not so much.
I like the fact they are being brought in with other purposes in mind, besides love interests. When you bring in a character, with no other purpose, then being a love interest, that character will usually come off stale.
I'm not crazy about the fact that he basically implied, one of them might be at one point, somewhere down the road. Not that, that surprises me, but I hope that's a long long long way off.
I like the fact he addressed the back of the impala situation. I had horrible visions, of basically what he described.
However i'm still not thrilled with a possible 12 episodes. I assume that's each. That's quite a bit actually. But that will depend on how it's done. I wouldn't be as worried about that, except for the fact it's an on the road type show.
I am happy some of the recurring characters are coming back. Bobby, Gordon etc...
I'm glad Kripke finally broke his silence though. That in itself eases my mind a bit.
Now we'll just wait and see what happens. I'm hoping for the best.

AWESOME!!! DUDE! keep up the excellent work!!!!!!!!!

I totally trust the Kripkeeper, especially since sides for episode 3.03 were released. Bela is in the sides, and it striking a lot of perople as a cool character. As far as I've heard on other message boards, people are behind Bela. Ruby, not so much, but at least Bela's got an 'ok' for a while. We'll just have to wait for confirmation of Ruby...

HAHA, people seem to be prefering Jo over the new girls!
You know somethings wrong when people think Jo should come back o_0

Kripke, I have faith in you. Just please please please bring back Ash. Dr Badass was hilarious. Well, to me anyway.

Sarah - I know what the interview says but that hasnt stopped people from thinking it. I have seen it. Quite frankly he very well could have just said "no I am not forced to say this" just so the bombardment to the CW offices would stop. We dont know but my point is he is positive about this and those of us fans that are against these new additions should really just relax until we actually see season three. Obviously our concerns got across to the TPTB.

Right now we have to take Kripke at his word. MsPersnickety is right though we are lucky to even be adressed. Most shows do not even give that much consideration to their fans, case in point Smallville.

Rebecca - I have to agree with you. From what the sides show Bela I think will work across the board, Ruby though... she is gonna get hit hard by fandom.

Sam - you are so right, lets celebrate the fact we are getting Bobby and Ellen back. BRING BACK MISSOURI !!!!

Wow, people are really naive. Kripke speaks like a true politician, making it sound like he's giving you what you want when he's really not committing to anything. Everything everyone was worried about is still on the table.

Do the math people. This 12 episodes tops line applies to both characters. They're not going to to be in many of the same episodes, so this could still stink to high heaven.

since this interview surfaced, I have noticed a huge change in the fandom. the tention has finally subsided, for the most part anyway. we've all retreated in to chill-mode, patiently waiting for season 3 to start. Why he didn't do this right from the beginning, we'll never know.
Im glad he did finally address the concerns of his loyal fans.
Im still skeptical about Ruby. Bela I can see lasting alot longer in this series.

All Ruby/Bela aside, Im super excited for the news that we'll be seeing Hendrickson and Gordon again.. can't wait to see what the boys do to slip out of hedricksons vice again!

and lastly, I've said it before... many many times.. and i'll say it again.. KRIPKE IS GOD! and he will not disappoint his LOYAL servants!

Okay, this sentence still makes me very nervous: "Honestly, I swear, at this point, I don't have plans for the girls to pair up with the guys. They might. But until I see who works best with whom, I'm just not going to pull that trigger.” As far as I'm concerned, that gun had better never be cocked...EVER.

As for Ruby's "shocking secret," I'm hoping it's that she's contracted a severe viral infection and has only two episodes to live.

Alright...seriously, I will place my trust in the Kripster for now.

MsPersnickety: yeah, Kripke spoils us. We're very lucky to have an incredibly amazing creator/exec who really listens to us and knows what he's doing. =]

Color me impressed AND a bit jealous. Oh who am I kidding, I'm so jealous of the SPN fans :) I wish the idiots in charge of Smallville would take the time to address their fandom like this. There's certainly an abundance of material for them to work with.

You gotta love Kripke. The OTH comment was great. I think most people would rather put a gun in their mouth than have a show like OTH.

Roxanne -- Actually, the TVGuide interview addresses the question of whether the network forced anything. Kripke says he had been planning to make Ruby a recurring character. When he presented the idea to the network, they say "why not two recurring women?" So he took Bela and fleshed her out. As Bela sounds like the more interesting character (to me), I'm fine with Kripke taking that advice.

In short: No one forces Kripke to do anything.

THANK YOU MR KRIPKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not trying to rule oyt these new characters, but I've read the sides. Bela, IMO, is the one that's gonna work, and Ruby is gonna go bye bye. I'm trusting Kripke with this season, but if either of these characters come off as theya re the better hunter, then they are done. The only ones IMO that can be better then the Winchesters are those that aren't appearing every other, or third episode *coughBobby,Ellen, andGordancough*.

Very pleased to hear Gordon, Ellen and Bobby are returning! And I trust Kripke's judgement - it's been an awesome ride so far!

First of all - Love the One Tree Hill reference. Thank goodness. It sounds like the additions will be fun. I'm looking forward to it.

I hope Jo didn't die. I liked the possibility of her and Dean being together. They argued so much - it seemed like the writers were setting something up. And they had nice chemistry.

I love the show, I love Kripke and I love Sam and Dean.

I loathe the idea and the news so far on Rubella, if anyone asked me what my worst nightmare for the show would be it would be 'kick-a*s' b*tches dragged in just to mess with the boys for the sake of grabbing teen viewers and then have our boys (who usually have more sense) fall for them.

Season three should be about Sam saving Dean and Dean dealing with his prospect. Kripke, don't go down that hackneyed road of fighting-then-romancing. Keep it masculine, keep it subtle, keep it to two leads ONLY.
Keep it Supernatural!

That said I'll be watching every second so the show can prove itself surprising, excellent and original all over again!

hello mr Kripke when are we going to know what dean necklace means and why his eyes were bleeding from the bloodly mary episode. i still have the feeling that the show is still centered around sam. I personally will like to see dean character evolve more.

it sounds really really good i wanted the guys to have some love interests and they are but i wanted jo to stay in it and be dean's love interest, she was perfect for him, she new about all the hunting and she forgive dean because of father. so i think it would be better if dean had jo instead of the new love interest.
thanks xx

I'm a OTH watcher, but I love Krikpe's quote.

I love him.

Kripke=God

Instead of complaining about the two new girls, let's celebrate the return of Ellen and Bobby!
Bless you, Kripke, for bringing my favorite characters back to me...-worships-

I know there are a handful that think Kripke was forced to say this by CW. He may have been but what he has said is all we have to go on for the time being. I think we all just need to stop. There are those who are for the addition and those who are not. Right now we just need to agree to disagree and stop bashing each other and claiming certain sides are not "true fans". We are all fans with differing opinions so get over it and respect it.

For those of us that do not like it, nothing in the world is going to change this until we see these episodes. We may be wrong, they may actually work...maybe.

For those same that are so ticked off and say they will not watch the 3rd season - do not stop watching the show. That only feeds into CW and we could lose our show. As much as it pains you, watch the first few episodes and see what the fuss is about. Until then we dont need to continue this blind hate. Lets wait and see if its worth it.
