Fighting Words: Gossip Girl's Ultimate Couple is Dan and Serena vs. It's Clearly Chuck and Blair!
Fighting Words returns today -- but for once, Sarah, Mia and I aren't fighting! We're pretty much unanimous on the topic of Gossip Girl couples -- but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to convince us otherwise. Read our take on Gossip Girl's ultimate couple, then voice your opinions in the comments!
Jackie: When Gossip Girl started, I thought Dan and Serena were being set up to be the ultimate couple of the show. Nate and Blair have no chemistry, in my opinion, and Serena and Nate had enjoyed a one-night stand, nothing more. I loved watching Dan and Serena’s relationship start up against all odds, and the fact that Blake and Penn are a real-life couple certainly didn’t hurt their chemistry!
But. Then there was “Victor, Victrola,” which ended with arguably the hottest scene on the entire show (see Sourcies Best First-Time Hookup), the Blair/Chuck limo scene, and I realized that Dan and Serena had nothing on this quick-witted couple. Blair and Chuck toss barbs like they’re water balloons, pioneer preppy trends, and turn Upper East Side society upside down before brunch. I still love Dan and Serena, but by the end of the season I agreed with Dan – they need time apart before they try being a couple again. Their drama exhausts me, but Blair/Chuck drama is just plain exciting. I hereby crown them the ultimate Gossip Girl couple!
Mia: The passion that fills Chuck and Blair when they are around each other is almost too hot to handle. Dan and Serena are so boring, and when they do have drama it makes me want to smack both of them across the face in hopes that they will come to their senses. Dan is too judgmental and Serena is just a complete moron (though I do like them as people and they’re not bad to look at). Chuck and Blair will always be the couple for me – although I don’t think they could ever really be together, and I’m okay with that. That being said, I think Ed Westwick could steam up a room with a broomstick, so perhaps this question isn’t fair.
Sarah: Gossip Girl suffers from a problem that has bedeviled shows since TV was invented. The Powers That Be decided who would be the central couple, and that couple just didn't click. Think Johnny and Greta on Hidden Palms, Ryan and Marissa on The OC, or even (and I know I'm going to get yelled at) Lucas and ANYONE on One Tree Hill. The pairings seemed like a good idea on paper, but something isn't there. In Gossip Girl's case, I find it hard to care about Dan and Serena: Serena turns Dan into a one-dimensional moralist, while Dan makes Serena act like a dim-bulb, flighty flower child with no grasp of reality.
And then there's Blair and Chuck. Bad guys tend to be more fun, and these evil-doers are the most delicious duo I've seen on the screen in a long, long time. Both actors ooze chemistry, and the sparks fly even higher when they're together. Plus, Blair and Chuck actually bring out the best in each other. Nate made Blair into a simpering victim. With Chuck the girl has a spine. Chuck? He's discovered there's a romantic side buried under decades of decadence. It's beautiful to watch.
Sorry, Dan and Serena – you've been displaced.

I think Chuck and blair are THE best couple, sorry SD fans. Chuck and blair have so many layers to their relationship, while dan and serena only have emotion. Which sure we can all lie to ourselves and say is cute, but i think we no deep down that like after 2 episodes of nothing BUT emotion, you want to rip your eyes out. Chuck and blair do have emotion, but they have so many different things, evil plots, schemeing, 'the game', sex appeal, and then love. They love each other but they are too scared to admit it. They are epic, sd are kind of a marrisa/ ryan couple, they will probally breakup and yet back together 5 times. BORING

I think it's also very telling when Josh Schwartz says things like: 'the show is a chess game. Chuck and Blair are the king and queen. Everyone else, except Serena, is a pawn'.
Even to the head honcho Chuck and Blair are the primary pairing. Honestly, I have loved a couple this much since Logan and Veronica.
They embody classic archetypal patterns but in a totally modern way. They're Scarlett O' Hara and Rhett Butler, and Katherine and Heathcliff. This nod to literary archetypes with regards to Chuck and Blair makes them even more emotionally affecting -- it's partly why so many people can root for them. Ultimately, they are the ones with the story worth telling.

Chuck and Blair pawn everybody. They're better written, better acted and just have explosive chemistry.
They were really unexpected which made their get together far more passionate and beautiful.

Whoever said Chuck and Blair are just sex... I'm sorry, but are you watching the same show? The way he asked "are you sure?" The hand holding? The way she holds onto his collar and wraps her little hands around her neck like she's sucking up all his warmth? There's definitely more than sex there. Did you not see the heartbreak on Chuck's face when he saw Blair with Nate?
Chuck and Blair knock it out of the park. If it weren't for them, this show would just be a way for me to waste an hour every Monday. They are the ones that make GG a show worthy of my obsessive personality.

dan and serena ARE the best couple. sure, blair and chuck are good. but dan and serena are definately the one with the MOST chemistry. they have emotion. Most scenes with blair and chuck are just SEX scenes. no real emotion.

i really love both couples but if i had to pick only one of them i would have to choose dan and serena
i think its sweet how chuck is such a jerk but truely cared for blair and i hope they get back together also
but contrary to the popular opinion i think dan and serens are the best couple. Dan and Serena are so cute and amasing together and it will be so sad if they do not get back together season 2

Yes, Dan and Serena are meant for each other, but so are Chuck and Blair. Look at Chuck's evolution--that best man speech was effing heartbreaking. They honestly bring out the best in each other.
And though I couldn't see either Dan or Serena with anyone else, honestly, I would rather Rufus and Lily be together...

I totally agree. Serena and Dan are like Naley for me. Yes sometimes they are not the most exciting couple and are put in the backround, but you couldn't imagine them not being together. Yes Chuck and Blair are hot, but I don't see them ever REALLY working out all that well so how can they be the ultimate couple. When I think of Ultimate couple I think of a couple you just don't mess with (think Naley) and that is not Chuck and Blair for me. Maybe they will end up together in the end but I can see people liking other people that both Blair and Chuck are with. Dan and Serena might not be the Ultimate couple yet but they are on there way, in my opinion.

We've been debating for so long about who is the best couple or who trumps who, and i am GLAD even you guys know that. All of the above reasons, total agree.
Dan/serena bored me. Total boring flowery married for 60 years couple. Gag me. I was a fan of theirs. Seriously liked them AT FIRST. Until they started faltering, and I faltered with them. Thank goodness Victor Victrola saved the day. It was like a slap to the face thats woken me up from a deep sleep or something. Amazing. The chemistry just...combusting, and awesome witted throwbacks at each other. Just something so different!
It's been one season 18 episodes, its definitely -not- early for me to determine which couple is ultimate couple. And ultimately the BEST ULTIMATE COUPLE (-IN MY OPINION-Just in case someone wants to get on my case for generalizing) is Chuck and Blair.
Which is why i dont understand why they still central the show on Dan and Serena.(agreeing with Sarah about shows deciding 'their fave couple') Oh well, up to them.

Dan and Serena are boring too death. So as the old saying goes, "Til death due us apart" if you watch Dan and Serena they will literally kill you. So say good bye to your wife or your husband.
Anyway, I ca't for season 2 because I hear there are going to be a tone of Chair.

I FLOVE Chuck & Blair - almost as much as I love Brucas (although, I mean, lets be serious, no one can beat Brucas).
I just hope that there won't be a Love trinagle which stops CB being together, like it did in OTH. I can just about refrain from throwing things at the tv in OTH - if GG goes the same way, my poor telelvision won't be able to take it anymore.
In answer, CB are the ultimate GG couple, hell YEAH.

I agree, it's Chuck and Blair all the way. No one on this show has as much chemistry as these two despite what those in charge tried to push the first season (meaning Dan and Serena). Hopefully we'll see much more of Blair and Chuck.

Contrary to everyone else's opinion, my favourite couple was - by far - Dan and Serena. Like Naley, they're significant characters, but not exactly the most important ones. Though Chuck and Blair do have a lot of chemistry, Dan and Serena are the more realistic couple - not necessarily in rich/poor standards, but they're the couple that slowly falls for each other, as opposed to having a one night stand and THEN falling for the other.
Chuck and Blair are amusing for the moment, but I want Serena and Dan back together.

Even though they both started off as the villanous foils for their (clearly intended to be stars of the show) counterparts Dan/Penn and Serena/Blake,

I don't think we can really say yet because of the way the season ended and because if you've read the books, you know that nothing's the way it's supposed to be. I'm biased because of the books (and because Chase is so yummy) and so I really wanna see NB together... but with the way the show has gone, I guess I'd say CB...? DS are like the Naley of OTH for me- they're in the background, I like them together, but they're not who I'm gonna fret about... but I'm sure in coming years we'll probably see some NateSerena, NateBlair, BlairChuck and DanVanessa so I guess only time will tell who will be the ultimate couple.

I totally agree about Blair and Chuck. I think they have the best (by far) chemistry on the show and they have the kind of dramatic relationship that just begs you to keep watching.
Dan and Serena are a cute couple, but more in the way that they're so cute it makes you sick and inevitably become less than interesting for the viewer.

I find neither Dan nor Serena interesting as individuals and as a couple, they're a couble dose of bland.
Chuck and Blair however and hot and intriguing. They're the reason a slowly became interested in this show. Generally I FF though scenes that don't have one or the other in them.

I totally agree with you ladies.
The only reason why I even started watching the show is because I saw a video on YouTube of them and was like “Whoa…he is hot” ahaha! So then I watch an episode and fell in love. If it wasn’t for Chuck and Blair and I wouldn’t even watch the show.
Chuck and Blair have so much chemistry you can practically see it steaming off of them. They are hot apart but even hotter together! Chuck is my fav character and so is Blair.
I think the reason why Chuck and Blair are so perfect together is because of Ed and Leighton I couldn’t imagine any one else to play them. I love Ed so much! He is so amazingly gorgeous and talented!
Dan and Serena are super boring and have too much drama that’s not even interesting. They don’t have nearly as much chemistry as Chuck and Blair, and you think they would because they are together in real life.
I mean the first season was all about Dan and Serena and now they are going to be together in the second season too? Why cant the writers just put Chuck and Blair together for good? They have the biggest fan base! Because they are the hottest!
I would like to see Chuck in an actual relationship because he is the only one who hasn’t been in one. And who better than Blair to be in one with? I love the side of Chuck we see when he is with Blair, sweet and romantic! There are just so many layers to their relationship and I would love to see more of it!
Cant wait for season 2!

Dan/Serena make me feel nothing, their scenes have no spark, they aren't interesting in any possible way.
Chuck/Blair have EVERYTHING! Apart they are amazing, and together they are beyond amazing.
I am really hoping for Nate/Serena to have a little something too though.

I whole-heartedly agree on Chair being GG's ultimate couple. However, that does not mean that the other couples have no chemistry or are completely wrong together. I think you guys were a bit harsh, and I didn't like that you dragged/brought up other TV show couples that in your opinion didn't work well together. One thing has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the other.

I completely agree with you on every point.
For me it's simple :
Dan/Serena were cute in the begginning but now really boring.
Nate/Blair : nothing to see here. Absolutely no chemistry (I entirely blame Chace "can't act" Crawford for that). Sorry for the fans of the book who love this couple.
And Chuck/Blair : these two can be hot, cute, passionate, ...
AMAZING couple who totally upstage Dan/Serena who should have been the IT couple of the show.

I dont know, I think its to early for me to decide who is the ultimate couple on GG. I do have to admit Blair & Chuck's car scene was all kinds of Hot. I started watching GG from that episode and I was hooked becuase of BC's chemistry. I do like Dan & Serena and I think they have really cute scenes together but them being the ultimate couple umm... I don't think so. I have a feeling that Blair and Nate will make a comeback and if they do it right then they might just be the ultimate couple. But I'm secretly hoping for a Dan/Blair Hook up, haha c'mon there's nothing better than two opposites attracting:)
Oh I do agree with Sarah about shows deciding on a certain couple to be the main focus and they look good on paper but the chemistry doesn't come across on screen. lets be honest if its not working then shows need to change it and let it go. *cough*LP*cough*

So I am going to have to disagree. I probably won't be able to change your minds but I TOTALLY disagree.
I LOVE Serena and Dan, they are my favorite couple on Gossip Girl.(but I also liked Ryan and Marrissa on the OC) I don't know what it is about them but for me they are just it. I can't imagine them with anyone else. I do Love Chuck and Blair though, just not as much and that might be because I also like Blair and Nate.(I always seem to like the couples no one else likes) I didn't like Blair and Nate in the beginning, but the second time they were together I LOVED them, or maybe I just REALLY like Nate and wanted something to work out for him, but either way it made me started to not like Chuck and Blair that much anymore, or maybe I just didn't like Chuck at the time. By the end of the season though I wanted Chuck and Blair together and I actually liked Chuck, and I did not want Blair and Nate together. But by that time Serena and Dan had become my favorite couple and I don't think any other couple on Gossip Girl could beat them. I get to attached to a certain Couple/Character and for the most part they stay my favorite Couple/Character
