Smallville: Who Can You Trust?
A series of grisly murders is rocking Metropolis on Smallville , and cuddly paramedic Davis Bloom tends to be the first responder on site. In fact, the only person more likely to be at the scene of a murder or accident or incident of bloody dismemberment is Clark Kent himself. That's because Clark is spending his nights huddled over the police scanner, trying to rescue ever imperiled soul in the city.
Davis and Clark run into each other at the Ace of Clubs, where something has just caused a hell of a lot of carnage. Davis is unconscious and covered in blood, so Clark tells him to go to the hospital. Davis does, but under his own power. He discovers (in a shower scene that we had to watch a couple of times just to make sure we covered the episode accurately-- the things we do for you!) that none of the blood is his own -- Davis doesn't have a scratch anywhere (and we do mean anywhere) on his body. What's going on?
Meanwhile, Chloe is attempting her own heroic endeavor -- she's set up a support group for hte meteor-infected. It ain't easy -- the kids are suspicious of her motive, each other, the non-infected, and the list goes on. It gets worse when Clark, suspecting that the nightclub killer is a meteor freak, speed-reads Chloe's membership roster and give the information to the police -- namely, a new detective named John Jones. Yep, it's Martian Manhunter! He's using her detecting skills to make up for the fact she doesn't have his alien superpowers anymore. He's also keeping busy keeping Clark's do-gooder missions under wraps.
Chloe is furious -- how dare he abuse her trust? She's also dubious when Clark starts making noise about Davis, who had admitted earlier that he was afraid he was the killer. Chloe told him that was impossible -- she knew he couldn't do such a thing! Davis is touched by her faith in him -- and maybe feeling a little bit more, too. But later, Clark steals medical records and discovers that one of the victims had Davis' tissue under his fingernails. Uh-oh.
Jimmy is also searching for the killer, and he talks Davis into letting him ride along in the ambulance. When Jimmy calls in over the ambulance's radio that some sort of monster is attacking, Clark suspects the worse. He superspeeds to the scene, and finds Davis looking dazed and bloodied. But before Clark can get too close, Davis is yanked backward into an alley. Clark discovers a shadow creature beating Davis and Jimmy up. He knocks out the creature with a tire, and it turns out to be one of Chloe's meteor-infected kids. Shadow-guy confesses to all of the murders, but one of Tess Mercer's lackeys isn't so sure. She recruits the kid into Tess' private supergroup, but she tells him she knows he didn't do all of the kills. If he had, where's a crucifix stolen from one of the victims? The kid can't answer, but we know -- it's hanging from Davis' rear-view mirror. Uh-oh.
In the end, things are left uncertain: Chloe and Davis meet, and Davis sort of admits that he feels a strong connection with her. Chloe doesn't reciprocate -- but she does say she can't see him for a while. Hmmm. Clark apologizes for doubting Davis, and for stealing the information from Chloe -- but he does say he's hurt that Chloe decided to protect strangers rather than help him. What if someday she trusts the wrong person? Jimmy is more convinced than ever that there's a secret hero hanging around Metropolis, and he vows to find him. And John Jones tells Clark that he's got to scale back his obsession with saving everyone, or he's going to get caught. Next week? It looks like that's exactly what happens.
