Supernatural News: Is Dean a Dick? Kripke Speaks!

The controversy has swelled to such a degree that the Almighty Kripke sent word down from on high to address the fans. It's such a rare occurrence that it's worth quote in full:
So I've never before responded directly to the fandom's comments about an episode, and I don't plan to make a habit of it, but I couldn't resist dropping in a thought about the episode "Yellow Fever."So sayeth the Kripke. Are you satisfied with his explanation? Do you see the episode in a new light now? Talk!Which is this:
Dean is not a dick.
None of the writers, or anyone on the creative team of Supernatural, think Dean's ever been a dick, past, present, or future. He's a hero. Dean did NOT contract the ghost sickness because he's a dick. Victims contract the illness because they use "fear as a weapon." Dean asks Lilith at the episode's end, "why did I get infected?" And she cryptically responds, "you know why. Listen to your heart." We, as the writers, probably should have emphasized this mystery more, I take responsibility for that omission. But the point is: the reason he was infected is because of a SECRET he's keeping. A dark secret that will be revealed in Episode 10. And not at all because of any dickishness, implied or otherwise.
Thanks, gang.

I feel like the fans need to apologize to Kripke for making him feel the need to address this situation. It was clearly pointed out the reason why Dean got infected was not because Dean was a dick. It was a cryptic message in the end but we all should know by now that the writers love to mess with our heads at least for a while. Actually, Sam already said when he was explaining to Dean about ghost sickness that being a dick wasn't a requirement to get infected.
To Con: Sam wasn't calling Dean a dick because he meant it. It's just how siblings mess with each other. Dean would have said the same thing if Sam had been infected (Btw, I'm a Dean girl).

I already knew that Dean wasn't a d*ck. And I thought that it was made clear that there was a different reason why Dean was infected. My problem was that Sam called Dean a d*ck while arrogantly saying he was not. Clearly Sam is in no position to be calling anyone (much less his brother who has always sacrificed for him) a d*ck. His own actions and attitude has been rather d*ckish all season.
While I appreciate Kripke for addressing this (he obviously appreciates the fandom) it really doesn't change why myself and others hated the unneeded line.

Personally, I didn't think Kripke needed to make any kind of comment, because it seemed to me that it was a very small section of the fandom who were up in arms over this. Writers don't need to justify themselves to their fans. So fans? Let the writers write and create this awesome show!

likewise, i didn't even think that line about dean being called a dick was even that important. and yeah i too feel that kripke didn't need to explain himself here. some fans need to chill, but i can't blame them for being so protective over dean. i don't really approve about the response/going nuts over the 'dick' line. i actually thought it made that scene a whole lot funnier. to me, that line wasn't the root cause of getting the ghost sickness was using fear as a weapon. but that did raise the question as to why sam didn't get the disease too. STILL kripke did not need to explain himself here, but thanks nonetheless cuz i'm soooo looking forward to episode 10 now :)
btw the pic of dean, the cw source put up, is soooo sexy.

I was confured about the reason why Dean was infected, I asumed that was because Sam has demon blood, but aparently it's not that. So I'm glad that he explaind that.
I also hadn't even tought about that before I saw the apology. I think some fans have to let this litle things go. Because the people behin suoernatural are doing an awsome job.

It wasn't just fans who didn't get the reason for Dean being infected, there were a number of reviewers, too. So, Kripke didn't issue that statement just because of fan reaction.
This is a show that never met an anvil it didn't like, and the way they kept using the word, if they were trying to create a red herring, they succeeded, maybe just too much. And maybe the new writers just wanted to see how many times they could say that word and get it past the censors, I don't know.

I didn't even reflect on it until I read the apology and even though I think it's awesome that Eric Kripke tries to forestall a crazy fan explosion, he really shouldn't have to do that.
We, the dedicated fans, love the show for whatever is thrown our way. So I say ignore the whiners and keep going, guys. You're awesome. All of you. Writers, actors, staff ... you name it. Thumbs up. Both of them.

Couldn't agree with you more therealdeal. Supernatural has some great fans out there but the ones who feel entitled to tell Kripke how to run his shows and characters... Just makes me shake my head.
Kripke owed no one an explanation. If they missed the point, that's not on him or the writing but the fans who chose to have a knee-jerk reaction to something that should have been laughed off. And by doing so, they completely missed the bigger picture.
I'm sorry Kripke didn't check other boards to see the LACK of reaction the "dick" thing got.

I feel embarrassed that Kripke felt the need to say those words. I really, really hope that he knows there are fans like me who appreciate him, his co and all the hard work they're doing. Kripke, other writers, Jared, Jensen and everyone else are working their butts off to make this incredible series for us to enjoy. They're creative, talented people and fans should show them more respect. We all are allowed to criticize their work reasonably - and that's it.
Of course people have right to voice their opinions, it doesn't matter if it's a negative or a positive one. Kripke & co can never please everyone and intelligent discussions and debates between fans may be very fascinating. Voicing your opinion politely, or even complaining is not the same thing as bashing. Unfortunately some fans do nothing but try to pick a fight with others on the forums. For example, all this Sam vs. Dean stuff or whatever is plain ridiculous considering that we've got two main characters in this show. That's a fact whether you have favorite brother or not. But hey, like I said, people have their opinions. If they don't agree with me it doesn't mean they're wrong.
What upsets me is when fans attack Kripke & co by being disrespectful. Some fans tend to start some kind of bashing fest after an episode has aired. They start bashing and accusing a writer or an actor (which is unbelievable since we've got the best main actors on TV at the moment), whining about the same line/scene/thing/whatever over and over again in their so called 'conversation'. They end up running in circles. Maybe 'til the next episode airs and they get something new to bash. That has happened a lot in this season, an episode after episode. I don't know if it has been happening before.
People should always be careful when they start blaming a writer of a show for writing characters out of characters. I understand that it's easy to get devoted to these Winchesters. It shows how brilliant job Jensen, Jared and writers have done so far. However, people should remember that this is Kripke's series. You can't accuse him (or some other writer) because you dislike the direction he's guiding his characters. No offense, but if you've got nothing good to say about an episode after it's aired and that happens after every single episode... You're free to stop watching the show. If you don't enjoy the ride, there's no point to torture yourself by watching this series.
Let's chill out and remember that Supernatural is just a TV show but Kripke and others are real humans :)
And to Kripke: (in Dean's words) GO TEAM

I'm glad that Kripke addressed this. It was confusing in the episode as to why it happened. At first I was thinking that he got infected because he can be an dick sometimes but it didn't make any sense because I wouldn't have classified him as such. Then I was thrown completely off course with what Lilith said... Thank you Kripke for clarifying this confusing issue. :)

I feel bad that Kripke even feels he has to address this subset of fans who are looking for the littlest thing to jump all over Kripke for. They hate when they bring on females, they hate that they call Kripke's *own* created character a "dick" even though Dean is one--but he's more than that.
There's just no winning with them.
Let the writers write.
