Smallville: And We're Back for Another Season!

Last week, we were discussing whether or not Smallville could/should wrap up this season with a Clois or Doomsday ending. This week, we know a Season 9 is coming our way!

Since we’ve had a lot of opinions back and forth on whether or not Smallville should continue into Season 9, we’d like to see how many of you are incredibly excited by this news and how many are slightly disappointed. Keep in mind, a new season allows the writers to tie up a lot of loose ends and not force an ending with half a season remaining. On the other hand, as some have mentioned (nod to Just Tina), it could be stretching out a show and ending in okay-bad territory rather than greatness.

Lets see a quick show of hands as to who is excited and who is not.

We know at least three readers who are happy to hear the Season 9 news based on their comments last week (Mike, Manu and Elaine…cheers!). Which leads us to ask a question about something Manu mentioned in his comment.

I don’t know what was wrong with the writers, but the way they played Clark while Lois was out and Lana in left Clark in an awful position. He was handling that past relation with Lana in Bride very well, and all of a sudden, the puppy love [struck] again.

Is it an issue with the writers making a mistake with Clark’s failures or is this a painful reminder of how many of us act in our actual lives? How many of us have gone through or had friends go through a break-up, start making progress in getting over it only to be dashed against the rocks again when the Ex reappears on the scene? Many of you mentioned your appreciation for Clark’s dealing with “everyday problems” growing up in Smallville, Kansas. Does this qualify as one of those dealings?

We feel a responsibility to mention that a Season 9 does open the opportunity for more Justice League development! Huh? Anyone? Yeah, we know there were some of you out there begging for this, so let us hear from you. We would love to have some comments based on where you think Season 9 should take us with the Justice League storyline.

Okay, in all honesty, we want to know what all of you think about the direction the show should take in the space of an entire season and a half. Should the writers push Doomsday off until the end of Season 9 and boldly throw Tom Welling into the Superman tights? Not to tread too heavily on last week’s discussion of the Doomsday/Clois finale, but should Smallville give up the ghost on the idea of Clark “growing up” and just have him become the hero we know he will be?

As always, we encourage you to join in on the discussions by commenting below, but before we go, we want to throw one more idea out there: How would your opinion of the show change if Smallville were able to reacquire Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) for the final season?

Gossip Girl: Gwen Stefani Set to Appear in May

We wonder if the perfectly dressed Blair and Serena can hold their own up against rock's biggest fashionista?

People Magazine reports Gwen Stefani and a reunited No Doubt will perform an Adam and the Ants ditty, "Stand and Deliver," on the May 11th episode of Gossip Girl.

Interesting song choice, but we think "Spiderwebs" would have been a better fit for this cell-phone crazy bunch.

Reaper: Father Figures, Half Brothers and Still More Secrets

Finally -- Reaper returns next week! We got some scoop from Bret Harrison himself, on how Sam is dealing with being Satan's son, how Andi is dealing with her new understanding of her boyfriend, and how everyone deals with Sam's taller, cooler, and probably much eviler half brother. Check it out!

Privileged: All About a Brand New You

A wedding, some philosophical differences, two break-ups and Rose swinging around the house on a zip wire. Talk about packing a lot into the Privileged season finale!

The backdrop for last’s night drama was the planning and eventual nuptials of the recently engaged Marco and Keith. With Kathy Griffin making a guest appearance as their wedding planner, these two are the only couple who looks like they will be around for season two (if there is one). On a side note, we expected funnier, better timed lines written for this well-known, d-list guest star.

The wedding plays a major role in Luis and Sage breaking up and serves as the grounds for Megan’s moment of spontaneity (a.k.a. the cute British guy). We’ll get to Megan in a moment. Just like Sage, we were bummed that Luis refused to attend the wedding. We know he is very religious, so when he refused to go Sage breaks it off. It’s not like she didn’t try to get past it. She even prepares a speech she wanted to give to Luis to try and change is mind. He totally snubbed her on it.

It was actually really sad. We loved this relationship from the start. It was almost a story of Romeo and Juliet. Too bad Romeo was unyielding in his beliefs. Sage realizes this inability to accept or try something new and different is totally opposite of how she wants to live her life. To see the expression on her face as she realizes what she is about to suggest is by far the most heartbreaking moment of the season. Ashley Newbrough gets our award for best scene of the night.

Less interesting but still important is Rose and Sage deciding that, for the first time, they won’t spend spring break together. Instead, Rose is off to the to the “northern Minnesota frozen wilderness” to find herself. After some “sisterly discussion” with Sage, Rose finally owns up to the fact that this trip might change her. With Rose, we get the feeling that things might not be the same if we get to see her again.

And for Megan, she couldn’t have picked a worst time to become "adventurous." At the start of the episode, things didn't seem so bad between our on-the-rocks couple, despite the way things ended last week. They bury themselves in their work -- but when work on the magazine gets tough for Will, they start fighting, and end up breaking up.

The breakdown goes like this: Will wants to blow off David, who is obsessing about the perfect layout for the magazine launch. Megan thinks Will is being irresponsible and unappreciative of the opportunity given to him. She goes on to say that he shouldn’t blow off David for Marco’s wedding, basically telling him straight up that he takes his job for granted because he’s been handed things his whole life. He calls her a type “A” personality who makes things harder than needed. Talk about opening a can of worms! That's one way to end a relationship...

As the night progresses we get the feeling that both of them get a better idea of the points brought up in the argument. Will realizes what Megan meant after he finally does some work, is uber proud of and gets plenty praise from David. Megan’s epiphany comes after talking to Laurel who, by the way, loves the first part of the biography Megan turned in. Too bad for Megan that she chooses to break out of her type “A” personality by sleeping with some random, but very handsome, guy from the wedding. We know! We thought the same thing: “That’s so unlike Megan”!

Expectantly, Will calls Megan the next morning to apologize and they talk to the point it looks like they might make up. Hooray! Just as Megan hangs up the phone, in which Will says he’ll be over in 10, the British guy from the wedding pops up from the blankets next to her. If you get the feeling you might have seen this play out someplace else before, think Friends and Ross and Rachel’s “we were on a break” issue.

We have to admit at this point we feel a little cheated. The plotline for JoAnna Garcia and Brian Hallisay could have been a little deeper and perhaps not practically ripped from Friends. What did you think about the situation? Did it leave you wanting more? Will you be turning in to a second season if the CW decides to continue it? Let us know below.

America's Next Top Model: Yo, shorty! And what's up with all the niceness?

You’ve got to hand it to that Tyra. She’s nothing if not innovative. Believe it or not, they’re already casting for Cycle 13 of America's Next Top Model. And this time it’s all about the shorties. TB is requiring all applicants to be 5’7” and under. The good news here is that half the men in Hollywood can try out. Tom Cruise -- have we got a gig for you!

Okay -- no dudes allowed, but the auditions are open to all females, aged 18 to 27 of all shapes, sizes, colors and backgrounds and they MUST be 5’7” or shorter.

We love the “theme” idea for the Cycle 13, which begs the question…

Are you short and hot? Do you have what it takes to be ANTM? Open casting calls are being held in Miami, Fla. on Saturday February 28th at Eden Roc and again on March 3rd in San Francisco at The Westin San Francisco Market Street. Auditions will be held both days from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Since it seems like March 4th is getting further and further away, we figured we’d check out some early promotional video The C-dub has provided of the new models this week to get our ANTM fix. And are we feeling fixed -- so we figured we’d spread the love.

In case you don’t have time to kill the way we do, here’s a quick overview of some of the new contenders.

Kortnie calls herself a plus size model and that’s a definite plus in our book. And “bless her heart,” she’s from Texas. What’s the saying -- “Don’t mess with Texas”? She’s not a walking bone bag and she seems intelligent and, well, funny.

Natalie seems crazy-confident but it looks like she’s spent some time in the modeling trenches already, and we’re predicting some trouble from her.

Another Texan, London, calls herself a “curvy model” and declares that she isn’t one of those “alien looking” clones that the industry is cranking out.

Nijah manages to come off as confident without being cocky. She took a year off of work and school to totally dedicate herself to modeling. So far it’s paying off!

And Tahlia (her friends call her “Tal”) spent eight years playing volleyball so not only is she pretty, she’s athletic too! She’s studying to be an EMT but it doesn’t seem like she has any modeling experience at all. However, if charm has anything to do with it she’ll go far.

They may all be on their best behavior, but we were kind of shocked to find ourselves liking these gals. What about you? Are there any who strike you as someone you would actually want to hang out with? Are there any who already rub you the wrong way?

Gossip Girl: Learn the Lingo

There are so many reasons why we love Gossip Girl -- the characters, the clothes, the over-the-top plotlines, the romance and revenge -- but one of our chief pleasures is listening to the way the writers and actors have fun with language. Now the networks wants to teach you to speak like a Gossip Girl Groupie. Check out these handy lessons!

Our Fave Shows Will Return! 90210, ANTM, Gossip Girl, OTH, Smallville and Supernatural Get Early Pickups

Good news! The CW has already announced pickups of some of our favorite shows for next season! We can stop worrying about the fates of America's Next Top Model, 90210, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural, because we know they'll all be back. Whoo-hoo!

Some of those pickups are hardly a surprise. ANTM is the network's big reality hit, and we can't even imagine a universe where Gossip Girl would be canceled. So the news is welcome, but not groundbreaking.

But the other shows gave us a bit more reason for concern: 90210 didn't have the blockbuster ratings the network seemed to expect, and it took a while to find its feet. But now that we're well into the Dilver romance, and Adrianna's multiple traumatic storylines have broken out, we're hooked. Plus, we always love the opportunity to gaze on sexy teacher Ryan, and we hold out hope for more Grandma Tabitha. Bring it on!

You all know how much we adore Supernatural, and we thought the network would be crazy to axe it -- but we've seen networks kill great genre shows before. So now that the show is safely renewed, we can breathe again -- and start wondering how Kripke & Co. are going to pull off the Angel/Demon war, the Winchesters at odds, and all the rest. Plus, how the heck will they top last year's season finale?

That leaves One Tree Hill and Smallville, which are long-time CW stars with passionate fans, but we wondered if the creators and stars were looking to wind down the series. There has been some debate on this very site about whether the shows have more stories to tell -- but The CW and the showrunners have just weighed in with an emphatic yes by renewing them. How do you think these shows will evolve in their seventh and ninth seasons?

Conspicuously absent from the list? Privileged and Reaper. Privileged has its season finale tonight, and we really hope this charming, feel-good show comes back for a second season. Tune in to give it a ratings boost! Reaper doesn't debut until next week, and we're waiting for it with bated breath. We hope both of these great shows get picked up again!

The release also didn't mention the Friday-night comedies, Everybody Hates Chris and The Game. We love the shows, but we're not surprised by the lack of love. The CW seems to have been moving away from comedy and focusing on making the network a destination for young women. Still, it would be a shame for these shows to disappear!

What do you think of the news? Vote in our polls, and talk about it in the comments!

Reaper Teasers: Work/Life Balance

Reaper returns March 3, and we can't wait! The CW promotions folks have given us a couple of clips to give us a taste of what's to come. First, the Devil is up to his old tricks, making Sam's life hell on earth (no, really!) and having a damn good time doing it:

Then, we get a hint of what things are like on the relationship front. Sam finally got the girl of his dreams last seaon on Reaper. Too bad his other job can complicate things. How will the relationship -- not to mention the people who make up the couple -- survive?

90210 Preview: Life in the Fast Lane

We have to wait a while before we get any new 90210, but when it returns, look out! We've got fast cars, sexy encounters, a hallway throwdown, and plenty more to get your pulse racing. Check it out!

Privileged Finale Preview: Rose's Spring Break Plans

We've got another sneak peak at the season finale of Privileged! Find out about Rose's "personal growth" since she moved into her how room -- and learn what she thinks the logical next step is, much to Megan's surprise.

One Tree Hill: Sweet, Sweet Music

We're still waiting (and waiting... and waiting...) for new One Tree Hill episodes, but at least we've got some Amazing Musical Guests news to ponder. TV Guide and E! are both reporting that Jessica Simpson’s ex hubby, Nick Lachey, will be guest starring on OTH on April 27. How cool is that? Nick will play himself. Apparently, Haley will be torn about selling him a song she wrote. But our tabloid friendly friend Nick will want that song so badly for his new album that he’ll trek his cute little behind to Tree Hill to convince Haley to give up the goods. We’d pay money to see those two kids sing together!

With musical guests like Gavin DeGraw, Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow and Pete Wentz showing up on the set we can’t help but wonder: What dream musical guest would you like to see on OTH?

Supernatural Sneak Peak: A Greater Evil

We've still got a few weeks to wait for new Supernatural (curses!) but at least the promo folks have given us something to chew over. Check out this chilling preview of the new episode, coming March 12.

Smallville: All's Fair in Love and Doom

Hahaha! The comments from last week leave us with fear of even mentioning Ms. Lang again, so we will steer clear. As you know, the next new episode of Smallville won’t be aired until March 12, which gives us plenty of time to discuss a few more of the nuances of the show.

For curiosity’s sake, let’s go to the polls.

From one of last week’s polls, it looks like a very close race between viewers wanting a Clois finale and a Clark/Doomsday battle. We know! You’re probably holding out for both in all fairness, but let’s talk about the individual elements in these options. First, a quick nod to David T. W. for his elaborate description of a good season finale.

From the trailer, it appears Clark will be revealing his secret to Lois and letting her put it in the paper. That obviously does wonders for her career as a journalist, but is it the smartest idea for Clark? With Tori Spelling’s Linda Lake returning, going public looks like a bad choice…of course, that would kill Linda’s blackmailing opportunity. And wait. Did they give away too much in the trailer? It distinctly looks like Clark slams a high-voltage cable in Linda’s chest.

Okay, reset. We’re talking about Clois. Though many of you want the season (possibly the last?) to end with the romance of Clark and Lois in full effect, aren’t they both a bit young (character-wise) to enter that stage? The comics (yes, we realize Smallville is a different interpretation) drag out the love triangle of Clark/Lois/Superman forever and though the setting has changed to Metropolis, let’s not forget the name of the show. This series is supposed to be based on Superman’s formative years, not his love life as an adult, right?

We’ll ride the segue-wave right into the introduction and battle with Doomsday. Should a show named Smallville, which until recently, has been about the life and times of a young Superman, even approach the battle with the villain that eventually kills the Man of Steel? To last week’s commenter, TLW: would the show really be pulling a Quantum Leap if the series ends without the death of Superman (a Superman who doesn’t know how to fly)? It seems it would be hard to pull off the iconic Death of Superman image with Lois cradling him since the backdrop is the red cape and that doesn’t exist in the show.

Sniff, sniff. What’s that? That’s right, it’s another poll.

All of this to say, look, we understand that big explosions and powerful enemies excite people, but the “human interaction” between Clark and those around him should be enough for a powerful storyline and ending, right? A comment from Karen last week stated:

“I first got into Smallville because it was about a young man struggling with growing up (and superpowers just happened to be part of that struggle). Somewhere along the way, the show became more and more focused on the superpower part of it--which is fine, but I feel that it gets more and more difficult to identify with the plot/characters. Maybe if the writers could bring back more of that "everyday struggle" bit...?”

We couldn’t create better comment-bait if we tried! Post your thoughts below and, as always, check back often to see what others are saying.

America's Next Top Model: The Wenches are Worth the Wait

It’s just one short week until Cycle 12 of America's Next Top Model kicks off, but we are having a hard time waiting. We’re anticipating plenty of makeover meltdowns and some extraordinary walks and wipeouts. In fact—we’re hoping that the Cycle will be so full of drama the producers will be inspired to create another ANTM Exposed!

The buzz for this next cycle has been huge. In fact, there are rumors circulating on the Internet about photos being taken of the top four girls who were seen on a beach shooting with Nigel Barker. But we’re not going to speculate before we’ve even seen the newbies in action. We just want to bask in the glow of what is to come.

Some of the gals have done pretty darn well without even walking off with the bouquet and tiara.

Lisa D’Amato and Bianca Golden will be appearing in a documentary called “Top Model Obsessed,” and several of the other “losers” have gone on to do amazing things. Then there’s Adrianne Curry may have hooked herself a Peter Brady fish but her modeling career seems to be floundering a bit. Have you seen her on any magazine covers lately?

So that brings us to the big question: Is it better for the career to NOT win ANTM? Is it enough just to be a contestant on the show?

Privileged: All About What's to Come

With one week left to the season finale of Privileged, we can’t help but ask ourselves if Will and Megan can make it. We were big proponents of the Will/Megan thing verses the Charlie/Megan after all, and to see these two fall short of being together for anything less than a full season is – well – heartbreaking.

And, while we where sad to see Michael Cassidy go (we mourn the loss of any hottie), we didn’t miss Charlie as much as we thought, especially not with the show adding Robert Buckley. Cassidy’s Charlie was more of sad, puppy dog character and we dig the harsh reality Buckley’s David has to offer. In fact, he already has made a large impact on Will and Megan’s relationship and we predict more coming during next week’s final.

With her magazine job in the tanker and issues brewing in her romantic life, can Megan survive it all? Our opinion is, yes. Even without her best friend by her side anymore, Megan now has her family to turn to. We got to see things with the Smiths go from bad to okay to really bad then worse and finally ALL BETTER! What a roller coaster! Plus, from the sneak peeks of next week, it looks as though Megan may have a book deal about to launch, despite the rejection she received from Will’s dad’s magazine.

And, whereas the writers may have neglected to really delve into Rose and Sage’s romantic relationships, we were actually perfectly happy remaining in the relationship between the two sisters. What started out as two sisters, practically joined at the hip and using one brain, somehow over the last few weeks totally changed into two separate teenagers – each complete with their own angst.

For those who missed last week, a big argument stemming from Miles' (the girls’ real grandfather) death has Rose actually moving out of the bedroom her and Sage have shared since childhood. We loved to see the development of the sisters and can’t wait to get more, but as far as their characters go, we’ve probably hit the peak for the season. So, with them, we’re already looking forward to the new possibilities a bright new season has to offer.

Smallville: You Have the Power!

Obviously, last night’s Smallville wasn’t new, but that shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone. So, instead of recapping a rerun, we took a little time to ponder two questions: What are the five best moments in the history of the show, and who are the five best villains? Hopefully, your brain is already racing to pick your favorites, but before we get to the top five lists, we want to address some of the comments on last week’s blog.

To start, thank you for commenting; nothing makes a blogger smile like some feedback. Secondly, wow! We have some very hot opinions on the end of Lana’s presence AND the direction the writers have taken since the beginning of Season 8. So now we have to ask:

Yeah, we know: we love stirring the pot. But seriously, after Kristin’s interview in the comic magazine Wizard #209, we don’t believe she’ll be coming back any time soon. Here's what she said:

I’m not opposed to doing TV. I just want it to have a sense of the story it’s trying to tell, and the intent behind it. Working on TV for eight seasons is -- sometimes it’s a really great storyline, and sometimes it isn’t.

Which leads us into your complaints about where the writers are going with the show: where do you want them to go? Is there a particular path Clark needs to travel or a villain he needs to fight? Some fans want Season 8 to end with a big showdown with Doomsday, while others seem to want more moral shades of gray from the supporting cast.

Now for the top five lists. Here’s how we’ll do this: Check out the list we compiled, and then vote in the multiple-choice polls below. Choose all the ones you agree with and if there’s one or two (or all) that you disagree with, choose “Other”, then post a comment telling us your other option and why.

And yes, we absolutely love Top Five lists. They don’t force you to pick anything as the end-all, be-all and actually give you room for a guilty pleasure vote.

In no particular order, the Top Five Smallville Villains we love are:

  • Lex Luthor
  • Brainiac
  • General Zod
  • Lionel Luthor
  • Zor-El

What about you?

Our Top Five Scenes in Smallville History (again, in no particular order):

Now, we open it to you. Comment early and often, and remember to come back and check out what others have to say!

America's Next Top Model: Girls on Film

Cycle 12 of America's Next Top Model is looking intense and the competition sure to be fierce. So that started us thinking…what does it take to win the whole enchilada?

It ain’t easy bein’ cheesy for the camera. Or is it? Models continually complain that posing for the camera all day is really hard work. But from what we can tell it just looks like a lot of standing around and scowling. Plus, you get to wear really great clothing, travel to exotic locations and on top of it, you make fat cash. How hard can that be?

Tell us what you think? Do you think that modeling is a tough gig? Could you do it?
