Breaking News: Smackdown Is Leaving The CW
We have some surprising Smackdown news this morning! In a statement, the network announced that Smackdown is ending its run on The CW after the 2007-2008 season. Here's the scoop from The CW:
After a successful decade of “Smackdown” on both UPN and The CW, The CW and World Wrestling Entertainment have agreed to conclude our partnership. We are grateful to Linda and Vince McMahon and their entire organization for providing great entertainment to our viewers for so many years. “WWE Smackdown” will continue to air on The CW until the conclusion of the 2007-08 broadcast season.
It doesn't sound like Smackdown is ending entirely, just that it won't air on The CW anymore. But why!? The show consistently delivered good ratings on Friday nights -- usually a death slot for networks. Does The CW have something else up its sleeve for Fridays, did Smackdown want out, or is it something else entirely? We can only guess (TVJab speculates it could end up on USA, and Eric's Pro Wrestling Blog thinks this could put Smackdown in a new position of power).
We want to hear what you think. Is this a good move on the part of The CW and Smackdown, or were you a fan of their partnership? Would you follow Smackdown to another network? Or are you happy that The CW won't be airing Smackdown next season so it frees up more space for new dramas or reality shows? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
